What is Selling Superman about?
In an unexpected twist that turned my world upside down, I discovered a 40-year-old secret hidden by my father – a truth known only to a select few. My dad, who had Asperger’s, was consumed by an intense desire to amass things, culminating in a collection of over 300,000 comic books. This collection includes the incredibly valuable Superman #1 (graded 7.0), worth more than $3.5 million, but it came at a heavy price for our family. The obsession took over our home, strained relationships, and left deep emotional wounds.
Following the death of his father, Darren stands at a crucial juncture, in possession of an extensive comic book hoard but also wrestling with the emotional remnants. Joined by his lifelong buddy Brian, who shares his passion for comics, Darren ventures into the process of selling his father’s prized Superman collection (and the entire collection), navigating both the thrill of liquidating this legendary collection and the profound emotional upheaval from his past.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “Selling Superman isn’t just about swapping comic books—it’s about healing, finding self-worth, and reshaping our family tales. We all carry stories from our families that influence us, but we hold the power to decide how they affect our tomorrow. Darren’s adventure mirrors the comics he clutches, a tale of heroism and self-discovery, battling inner demons with as much bravery as any superhero would.
