As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent in the digital battlefield, I must say that the 2024 ESL Challenger Atlanta final was a nail-biting spectacle. The underdog story of FlyQuest triumphing over the once-formidable BIG Clan was an exciting turn of events. However, watching BIG Clan’s performance throughout the tournament brought back memories of my own gaming days – when I was on the brink of greatness, only to falter at the last hurdle.
FlyQuest Australia emerged victorious as champions of the 2024 ESL Challenger Atlanta, defeating BIG Clan with a score of 2-1., Unfortunately for BIG Clan, their German team seemed to work against themselves once more.

In an almost flawless journey, Giant advanced remarkably close to the championship, winning every single game in the group stage with a score of 2-0. They then defeated Oddik and M80 effortlessly, losing only a minimal number of rounds – just 9 across two different maps.
In the semi-final they then met Portuguese super team SAW and dropped their first map of the tournament on Nuke. However, they came back and reverse-swept the series on Ancient and Vertigo.
From where I was sitting, it felt like history repeating itself in the grand final. We ended up losing our choice of Ancient, but managed to pull off a victory on their pick, Vertigo.
The chosen map would have been Dust 2, a map that’s long been a favorite among the German players. They clinched their last LAN title on this map at Dreamhack Leipzig in 2020. However, things didn’t go as planned.
They played on the back foot throughout the entire map, winning only 3 T-Rounds in the first half of play.

Star player for team BIG, Karim “Krimbo” Moussa, gave it his all. He single-handedly propelled BIG past SAW in their match and scored an impressive 32 kills during the first map of the final. Moreover, he tallied up 25 frags on the decisive map as well.

But it simply was not enough, the rest of his team underperformed.

On the third map, BIG Clan’s AWPer Florian “syrsoN” Rische struggled significantly, managing just 8 kills. Typically, he excels on the map Dust 2, showcasing impressive play.
Alistair “AliStair” Johnston, his counterpart in sniping, scored 22 kills (frags) and significantly assisted the Australians to secure their inaugural trophy for the very first time.
Ultimately, FlyQuest took Dust 2 by 13-9, collecting the 2–1 series win and lifting the trophy.
The wait goes on for BIG Clan to claim their initial LAN tournament trophy after almost five years. Is it likely that they’ll take home a trophy once more at some point?
