The Motion Picture Association (MPA) rating for Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 has been revealed.

In January of next year, the science fiction film titled Mickey 17 will hit U.S. cinemas. This upcoming production is directed by the acclaimed Bong Joon-ho, who brought us Parasite. The movie boasts a talented cast that includes Robert Pattinson and Naomi Ackie, among others.

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has formally assigned an R-rating to Mickey 17. This rating is due to its inclusion of intense violence, recurrent use of strong language, explicit sexual scenes, and drug-related matters.

What is Mickey 17 about?

According to the official summary, the upcoming film “Mickey 17,” directed by Bong Joon Ho, who won an Academy Award for “Parasite,” is set to be another groundbreaking cinematic journey. In this story, the protagonist, Mickey Barnes played by Robert Pattinson, finds himself in an extraordinary situation where he works for an employer with an unusual requirement – complete dedication to the job… which means sacrificing his life on demand.

In addition to Pattinson, Ackie, and others, the movie also features Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and several other talented actors.

In simpler terms, Mickey character 17 is a person who holds the lowest possible expectations for his life, but these expectations are consistently surpassed, to the extent that he endures a job that causes him daily distress. Pattinson described this in relation to the movie, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly at CinemaCon this year. Later, character 18 enters the story, suffering from frontal lobe damage and lacking self-discipline, with an overactive sex drive. It’s like portraying a wicked sibling or twin.

The film “Mickey 17” is adapted from the 2022 novel “Mickey7,” penned by Edward Ashton. The production of the movie is handled by Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Bong Joon-ho, and Dooho Choi, while Brad Pitt, Jesse Ehrman, Peter Dodd, and Marianne Jenkins act as executive producers.

Besides Parasite, Bong Joon-ho’s past works encompass films like Barking Dogs Never Bite from 2000, Memories of Murder in 2003, The Host in 2006, Mother in 2009, Snowpiercer in 2013, and Okja, which was released in 2017.

In U.S. cinemas, Mickey 17 is scheduled for release on January 31, 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
