Kevin Smith Wants Sarah Michelle Gellar for Mallrats 2 Cast, Actor Responds

As a gamer with a deep-rooted love for ’90s cinema and a soft spot for comedies, I can’t help but feel a wave of excitement and nostalgia at the prospect of Mallrats 2. The original was more than just a movie to me; it was an escape, a source of laughter, and a tribute to the camaraderie between friends that transcends time and space.

The 1995 comedy movie “Mallrats,” known for its unique take on humor, has become a cult favorite among viewers. Ever since then, fans of this classic entertainment have been eagerly awaiting a sequel. Unfortunately, the sudden and unfortunate death of actress Shannen Doherty earlier this year has caused significant delays in the production of the sequel. In a recent interview, director Kevin Smith mentioned that he plans to address this challenge in “Mallrats 2” sensitively by casting Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was close friends with Doherty, as Rene Mosier.

Kevin Smith wants to make Mallrats 2 with Sarah Michelle Gellar as Rene Mosier

As a dedicated admirer, I’d like to share that Smith expressed his ambition to mold Mallrats 2 as a heartfelt homage to Shannen Doherty, by envisioning Sarah Michelle Gellar stepping back into the shoes of Rene Mosier.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the versatile movie director revealed updates on his reimagined approach for the eagerly anticipated sequel to Mallrats. Smith announced that rather than rewriting the script and omitting Shannen Doherty’s character, Rene Mosier, he aims to recast her role in a manner that pays tribute to the deceased artist. The experienced filmmaker also hinted at Sarah Michelle Gellar as a potential cast member for Mallrats 2, emphasizing her past relationship with Doherty and himself.

Smith stated that Shannen’s dearest friend is Sarah Michelle Gellar, and he has collaborated with Sarah on “Masters of the Universe: Revelation.” Given that Sarah was friends with Shannen and had previously auditioned for “Mallrats” 30 years ago, Smith suggested that if there’s a chance we can produce “Twilight of the Mallrats,” he would ask Sarah to replace Shannen.

The experienced director further elaborated on the potential impact of casting Sarah Michelle Gellar in Mallrats 2. “I believe it would hold a personal significance for her due to her history with Shannen,” Smith stated. “She’d embody Shannen’s charm, making it almost like having Shannen herself on set.

Sarah Michelle Gellar responds to Kevin Smith’s Mallrats 2 idea

Just a short while after Kevin Smith shared his plan for a Mallrats 2 collaboration with Sarah Michelle Gellar, she publicly expressed her thoughts on the project.

Following my chat with Smith, I saw The Hollywood Reporter post an update about the Mallrats sequel on Instagram. Even Sarah Michelle Gellar appeared to be on board with the project, responding with “Count me in!” to the post.

Currently, there’s no definite news about the development of Mallrats 2. According to Smith, Universal hasn’t approved the project yet because of their ongoing changes in leadership. Therefore, at this point, Julia’s potential role in Twilight as the Mallrats character is still just an idea waiting to be realized.

At present, the director of Clerks is preoccupied with organizing promotions for his new comedic project called The 4:30 Movie. Take a look at Kevin Smith’s in-depth interview with Tyler Treese from ComingSoon, where he shares his personal stories that influenced the creation of the 2024 coming-of-age comedy.
