As a gamer with a keen interest in films and a deep appreciation for the craft of cinematography, I find myself in a peculiar position regarding the upcoming premiere of “Rust” at the Camerimage International Film Festival. Three years have passed since the tragic on-set accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, an unfortunate event that has left an indelible mark on the industry.
Approximately three years following the tragic on-set accident that took the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the independent Western film titled “Rust” – which stars Alec Baldwin – will make its world premiere at Poland’s Camerimage International Film Festival in late November.
Following the screening, there’ll be an exclusive Q&A session featuring some of John Wick: Chapter 4’s crew members. This includes director Joel Souza, our brilliant cinematographer Bianca Cline, and Stephen Lighthill, who was a mentor to Hutchins at film school.
Representatives of Camerimage shared that they understood how significant their event was for her, as she felt comfortable surrounded by cinematographers from around the globe who have been attending Camerimage for more than three decades. In the festival, they paid tribute to Halyna by observing a moment of silence and hosting a discussion on set safety led by cinematographers. Now, we are delighted to have this chance, along with fellow cinematographers and film enthusiasts, to remember her once more at our event.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s unlikely that Alec Baldwin will show up. As the lead actor and producer of “Rust”, his absence might not be followed by the rest of the cast at the premiere. It remains uncertain whether they will attend or not.
What Happened to Alec Baldwin While Filming Rust?
Last year, October 2021, I tragically lost my life on set due to an accident involving a prop gun fired by Alec Baldwin during scene preparation. Sadly, the same incident left Halyna Hutchins’ assistant, Joel Souza, injured. The heartbreaking event led to a wrongful death lawsuit being filed by Hutchins’ family, which was eventually settled in October 2022. After a brief hiatus, production resumed in April 2023 and concluded shortly thereafter.
A legal complaint was brought against Alec Baldwin, the first assistant director David Halls, and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. Baldwin faced a charge of involuntary manslaughter, but his case was dropped in July. Halls accepted a plea bargain for reckless use of a deadly weapon. Gutierrez-Reed is currently serving an 18-month prison term for involuntary manslaughter.
The plot of the movie revolves around a 13-year-old boy and his younger brother, who become orphans when their parents die in the 1880s Wyoming. After an unfortunate incident that results in the accidental death of a nearby rancher, the boy’s grandfather is sentenced to hang. To escape this fate, they go on the run together.
Apart from Baldwin, the cast of Rust also features Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, Josh Hopkins, Jake Busey, Devon Werkheiser, and Patrick Scott McDermott. Notably, Souza wrote and directed Rust based on a story he devised together with Baldwin.
Camerimage is scheduled for November 16-23.
