The Penguin’s Cristin Milioti Reveals Multiple Superhero Role Rejections

As a fan, I can’t help but be utterly impressed by Cristin Milioti‘s journey to The Penguin series. Her persistence and resilience in the face of repeated rejections from superhero projects is truly inspiring. It just goes to show that sometimes, the right role finds you at the right time.

Cristin Milioti takes on the chilling role of Sofia Falcone / The Hangman within the HBO series “The Penguin”, a spin-off from Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” (2022). Milioti has shared her enthusiasm for the superhero universe and revealed that she encountered numerous setbacks before securing the part in “The Penguin”.

Prior to the storyline in the series, Cristin Milioti’s character Sofia had been confined in Arkham Asylum following her conviction for killing at least seven women. In the first episode, we find her back home. After discovering that her brother Alberto has been murdered, she resolves to avenge his death and forms an alliance with the main character.

During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Milioti shared her methods of getting ready for the character she portrays. “I have my own small routines and techniques,” she mentioned.

A significant part of it was through the script, which helped me connect deeply with this character. Additionally, I collaborated with a movement coach, which proved beneficial in discovering subtle nuances. To further develop her, I curated a playlist – a common practice among actors. However, my primary goal was to bring this person to life, and as I delved deeper into the role, I discovered methods to solidify her presence.” (Palm Springs actress explained)

This month, Milioti shared with The Washington Post about her past unsuccessful efforts in collaborating on superhero productions. “I’ve auditioned for every one of them,” she reminisced, “but they didn’t seem keen.

When reminded about her previous comment, Milioti told The Hollywood Reporter that although she’s still puzzled as to why she didn’t secure any of those projects, she felt “grateful” for not having done so. Milioti suspects she might not have had the opportunity to portray Sofia, a character she deeply identified with and was fascinated by from the start, if she had landed those roles instead.

The first episode of The Penguin premiered on Saturday, September 19.
