Joker 2: Is Folie à Deux the Last Movie? Will There Be More Sequels?

As a die-hard DC fan who’s been following the Joker saga since its inception, I must say, the anticipation for Joker 2: Folie à Deux is palpable. The idea of a potential Joker 3 or Harley Quinn spin-off has been tantalizingly dangled before us, but alas, it seems like we’re about to bid farewell to our beloved Arthur Fleck, portrayed so brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix.

As the release of Joker 2 draws near, there’s speculation whether it marks the end of the franchise. Might we see a third Joker film or a Harley Quinn spin-off within DC’s Elseworlds universe? Is Todd Phillips planning further sequels beyond Joker: Folie à Deux in the series?

Here’s all you need to know.

Is Joker 2: Folie à Deux the last movie of the franchise?

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but speculate that Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Arthur Fleck might be drawing to a close with Joker 2. Initially, the first Joker film was intended as a standalone story, but its unprecedented success, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie and surpassing $1 billion (currently at #2 after Deadpool and Wolverine), led to the creation of Joker: Folie à Deux. However, director Todd Phillips has made it clear that he’s not planning on continuing his journey in the DC universe with more films.

Will there be a Joker 3 or Harley Quinn spin-off?

Back in the beginning of this year, someone grilled me about whether I’d be up for helming Joker 3. But hey, I had to turn them down flat because the yarn of Arthur Fleck is set to be wrapped up with Joker: Folie à Deux – that’s me, speaking as a fan who can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!

When conversing with Variety, he expressed: “I enjoyed acting in these films like a sandbox for two movies. However, I believe we’ve communicated everything we intended to within this universe.

Recently, there was talk about a solo Harley Quinn movie featuring Lady Gaga. However, when asked about his involvement, Phillips stated he wouldn’t participate in that project as well.

If “Joker: Folie à Deux” doesn’t continue its success and prevent Phillips from returning to the DC universe, fans should not hold their breath for more films in this particular world. Instead, the future of DC is likely to be shaped by James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, as well as Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” universe.

Joker: Folie à Deux hits theaters in the US on October 4, 2024.
