As a die-hard fan who has been eagerly waiting for more adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson since the series wrapped up in 2017, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear that the BBC’s iconic adaptation may have a future! With the brilliant performances by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, coupled with the genius minds behind the scenes like Sue Vertue, Steven Moffat, and Mark Gatiss, it’s a combination that simply can’t be beat.
According to one of its producers, the popular Sherlock series on BBC featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is expected to continue in the future.
The TV show “Sherlock” first appeared on screens in 2010. It ran for four seasons, each consisting of three episodes. In addition, a special episode titled “The Abominable Bride” was shown between the third and fourth seasons. The series came to an end in 2017. Benedict Cumberbatch portrayed Sherlock Holmes, while Martin Freeman played Dr. John Watson in this production.
Although Sherlock appears to have concluded following Season 4, producer Sue Vertue hints that the show might make a comeback at some stage in the future.

She shared with Deadline that she’s hopeful about the show’s continuation. ‘There could be a time for it in the future,’ she said, ‘but only if everyone is on board and willing to participate. I’ve got the set stored away somewhere, though it might not be in great shape by now. The real challenge lies in coordinating everyone and getting the actors excited about returning.’
Mark Gatiss, joint creator of the series alongside Steven Moffatt and portrayer of Mycroft Holmes, has expressed interest in the past about creating a Sherlock movie starring Cumberbatch and Watson.
In an interview with The Guardian back in 2023, he expressed that people often underestimate the challenge of filmmaking, saying it’s tough to captivate audiences and bring projects to life on screen. He recounted his conversation with Edgar Wright about Ant-Man, which consumed eight years of his time without ever seeing the light of day. Eight years is nearly a full decade, and if you add up several such stretches, it’s enough to take your life and produce just four films. However, he also shared that they were passionate about creating content for television and harbored a desire to make a Sherlock movie, considering it the logical step in their creative journey.
At the 2024 Olivier Awards, Gatiss too expressed an interest in creating a film. Remarkably, much like Vertue’s statement, he acknowledged that coordinating everyone can be quite challenging.
All four seasons of Sherlock are currently streaming on Hulu.
