Blizzard reportedly working on a StarCraft shooter, for the third time

As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must confess that the news about Blizzard’s third attempt at creating a StarCraft shooter has left me feeling a tad like Sisyphus pushing his boulder uphill.

As a passionate gamer myself, I can’t help but get excited about the latest scoop by Jason Schreier, the renowned gaming journalist. He’s hinting at a possible StarCraft shooter in production, and if true, this would be Blizzard’s third attempt at the genre! Fingers crossed for more details soon.

During the promotional period for his novel ‘Play Nice: The Ascent, Decline, and Prospects of Blizzard Entertainment’, Jason Schreier appeared on IGN’s podcast Unlocked. One subject covered in the book was the endeavor to create a StarCraft-themed shooter game. When asked about this, Schreier mentioned:

Yes, that is a project that as far as I know is in development, or at least as of the time that I wrote this book was in development. They are working on a StarCraft shooter, StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard.

This time around, the buzz arises from the fact that Dan Hay, a long-term Ubisoft employee who worked on Far Cry 3 to 6 since 2011, and has recently joined Blizzard Entertainment as GM/VP in 2022, is now part of the team.

It’s not unprecedented that Blizzard has experimented with creating a shooter within its revered real-time strategy series before. In fact, as far back as 2002, they had been developing StarCraft: Ghost, a tactical-action shooter for consoles, but unfortunately, this project was shelved in 2006.

In a subsequent endeavor dubbed “Ares,” they envisioned a gameplay style that blended elements of StarCraft and Battlefield for shooting action. Unfortunately, this project was abandoned in 2019 as Blizzard prioritized their efforts on Diablo IV and Overwatch 2.

As Schreier said:

…it really just shows you that Blizzard cannot quit StarCraft shooters.

Although it’s pleasing to learn that StarCraft continues to exist, it seems unlikely that a StarCraft first-person shooter game will ever materialize. For now, it remains an aspiration, similar to Half-Life 3, and while we may someday witness its creation, for the time being, it’s more like a dream or fantasy.
