Superman: David Corenswet on Gaining Weight for DCU Movie

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for superheroes, I can’t help but feel a mix of awe and anticipation upon learning about David Corenswet‘s transformative journey to embody Superman. His dedication to the role is truly commendable, as evidenced by his impressive weight gain that had him bursting out of his wardrobe!

Actor David Corenswet is putting in a lot of effort to embody the spirit of Superman for the forthcoming DC Universe film. This involves building muscle and adding weight at the gym.

Corenswet details his maximum weight gain while training

During an interview on the Manly Things (approximately) Podcast, Corenswet disclosed that in preparation for his role, he gained up to 238 pounds and grew so large that none of his garments could accommodate him anymore.

Corenswet stated, ‘When we began filming, I wasn’t 238 pounds; instead, that was my heaviest. It was fantastic, and I yearn to return. I donned a crew neck sweatshirt… from Champion. Then, I put on one of those oversized sweatshirts – perhaps an XL or double XL – and thought, ‘This is me! This feels incredible.’ I couldn’t squeeze into any of my trousers anymore.’

Even though he was larger in size, Corenswet acknowledged that his body wasn’t feeling good as he gained weight rapidly. By the time filming began, he had already reduced some of that weight.

Corenswet stated, ‘I was at the heaviest point in my life then,’ and then he began to shed pounds before filming commenced. He started filming at around 228-230 lbs. He confessed that his intention was to use this opportunity as an experiment to explore what it felt like to gain as much weight as possible.

The film’s summary states: “Superman narrates his tale, where he navigates blending his alien background as Kal-El from Smallville, Kansas with his human upbringing as Clark Kent. He personifies honesty, justice, and the American spirit, all while being influenced by human compassion in a world that often views kindness as outdated.

In the upcoming movie, scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, Corenswet (known from Pearl and The Politician) takes up the leading role as Superman. Meanwhile, Rachel Brosnahan, who’s famed for her work in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, will portray Lois Lane. Additionally, Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and others are also part of the cast.
