As a horror enthusiast who’s been through countless sleepless nights thanks to these spooky flicks, I can confidently say that Netflix still has some gems up its sleeve for us die-hard fans. While The Conjuring will forever hold a special place in my heart, there are other chilling tales that deserve a watch.
If you find that the thrill of Halloween extends beyond October for you, or if you’re a connoisseur of terrifying films, you might be seeking alternative horror flicks now that “The Conjuring” (and its sequels) will no longer be available on Netflix from Sept. 30. In your quest to find suitable substitutes to keep the spooky season alive, let’s explore some other chilling movies you could watch instead.
Despite the fact that “The Conjuring” remains my top pick, it’s also true that Netflix offers several other chilling movies that are certainly worthy of a single viewing. Among them is a film starring none other than the character played by Patrick Wilson, who portrayed Ed Warren himself.
The Haunting in Connecticut
This story, which begins by depicting a true-life tragedy following a cancer diagnosis, significantly enhances the horror experience. As presented by Netflix in a brief summary, “A family’s relocation to Connecticut takes an ominous turn when they encounter chilling supernatural occurrences, revealing their new house was once a mortuary with a troubled past.” However, this is merely the tip of the iceberg, as the movie delves deeper into something far more sinister than mere ghostly apparitions.
This film may not be a direct sequel to The Conjuring, but it shares a link due to the fact that its narrative stems from an authentic case that the Warrens (the real-life duo portrayed in The Conjuring movies) investigated during their career. Knowing this adds an eerie layer of reality, making the movie all the more chilling.
Insidious: The Red Door
As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that I’m part of the Insidious universe, as this film, “Insidious: The Red Door,” showcases Patrick Wilson’s acting prowess and marks his directorial debut. This installment can be enjoyed independently, but if you’ve followed the series, you’ll appreciate it even more. “Insidious: The Red Door” delves deep into generational trauma, focusing on the torment inflicted by a malevolent entity that has plagued a family for generations.
This movie is a chilling depiction of how buried pain can persistently pursue you, even as you try to escape it. Moreover, the trauma’s focus on a tormenting demon that has relentlessly haunted a single family across generations certainly enhances the complexity of the narrative.
Malevolent
This movie, unlike “The Conjuring”, features paranormal investigators who are revealed as frauds initially. However, their encounter with a genuinely haunted house gives this film its own unique appeal. In many aspects, Malevolent truly embodies its name, suggesting an ominous and malicious presence lurking within the haunted mansion that the investigators are probing.
2018 saw the premiere of this film, and it received an extra layer of intrigue with the selection of Florence Pugh to portray one of the fictitious detectives who unwittingly steps into a horrifying reality.
Annabelle
Given that Annabelle is a spin-off of the Conjuring series, it’s an ideal choice to explore this horror genre instead of the original films. Moreover, since the haunted doll is initially introduced in the Warrens’ home, watching this movie seems particularly apt among our top horror picks on Netflix at the moment (given its uncertain stay on the platform).
Without a doubt, Annabelle stands out among horror films due to its chilling premise – a haunted porcelain doll that instills fear in anyone who owns it. Given my inherent unease around such dolls, it’s safe to say this film is a must-watch for those craving well-crafted horror experiences.
I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House
The movie “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House” combined elements of horror and mystery in an unexpected way. It wasn’t incredibly terrifying like some other horror films, but its intriguing storyline kept me engaged until the final credits rolled. The initial appeal for me was the plot about a young nurse taking up residence in the home of an elderly author who specialized in horror literature. However, as the narrative unfolded, it was the strange occurrences that left me eager to find out what would happen next.
This film may not appeal to all horror enthusiasts due to its lack of typical jump scares, but I find myself drawn to it because of this very quality. Additionally, its distinct narrative sets it apart from other horror productions.
