What is Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu horror movie about?

In Robert Eggers’ film Nosferatu, we find a chilling narrative about an enchantment between a tormented lady and a dreadful vampire who is smitten with her, leaving a trail of unspeakable terror behind.

Robert Eggers has made a name for himself by directing films such as The Witch (2015), The Lighthouse (2019), and The Northman (2022). Additionally, he is credited with writing the script for his upcoming Nosferatu project.

The first version of Nosferatu, released silent, featured Max Schreck as Count Orlok. This movie was not a direct adaption from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula but rather an unauthorized interpretation. Despite deviating substantially from the book, Stoker’s descendants took Prana Film to court over the unauthorized adaptation. The court decision ordered all existing copies of Nosferatu destroyed, yet some miraculously survived, and today it is recognized as a groundbreaking classic in cinema history.

Bill Skarsgård portrays Count Orlok in the adaptation of Nosferatu by Eggers. The ensemble includes Nicholas Hoult as Thomas Hutter, Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Friedrich Harding, Emma Corrin as Anna Harding, Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, and Simon McBurney as Herr Knock.

In the year 2000, Willem Dafoe portrayed Max Schreck in the movie Shadow of the Vampire, a production directed by E. Elias Merhige. This film revolved around the behind-the-scenes story of the creation of the 1922 film. Notably, Dafoe’s captivating performance earned him a nomination for the Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Nosferatu will be released in United States theaters on December 25, 2024, from Focus Features.
