Where Is Batman in The Penguin? Why Doesn’t He Appear?

As a seasoned gamer of DC comics and movies, I’ve seen my fair share of Batman adaptations. The Penguin series has certainly piqued my interest, but where is our Dark Knight?

In Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022) sequel, the intriguing drama series titled “The Penguin” has left audiences on the edge of their seats. This series delves into the life of Oswald “Oz” Cobb as he ascends in the underworld. Amidst Oz’s power struggle, viewers find themselves eager to learn more about the mysterious presence of the iconic figure, Batman or Bruce Wayne. So, one might wonder, where does Batman/Bruce Wayne fit into the storyline of The Penguin?

Here’s what we can expect regarding the possible depiction of the renowned DC character in the upcoming series.

Where is Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in The Penguin?

There are numerous theories of Bruce Wayne or Batman’s presence in The Penguin.

In the final scene, it was revealed that the Riddler had orchestrated a catastrophic flood in Gotham City. To complicate matters, the death of mafia boss Carmine Falcone created even more chaos. The crime rate soared by an astounding 42% within just two weeks as depicted in Episode 2 of The Penguin. Although news outlets reported Batman’s heroic actions during the attempted assassination of mayor-elect Bella Real, there were no subsequent updates regarding his location.

Even though it’s been confirmed that Batman won’t show up in The Penguin series, fans are coming up with theories to explain his absence. One possibility is that Batman is recovering from injuries he received at the end of The Batman. Alternatively, he could be collaborating with Commissioner Gordon to ensure Gotham’s safety or helping to rebuild the city after the floods. Some fans even speculate that Batman might have been kidnapped by the enigmatic Court of Owls prior to The Batman Part 2.

Will Bruce Wayne or Batman cameo in The Penguin series?

It’s extremely uncommon for Batman to make an appearance in “The Penguin,” as the creators have stated categorically that it won’t occur. However, there’s just a tiny chance that it may transpire.

In “The Penguin” production, it’s been stated that Batman won’t be part of the show, making a cameo appearance highly improbable. Yet, there’s talk that Robert Pattinson could make a brief end-of-series appearance to lay the groundwork for “The Batman Part 2”.

Why Batman is not in The Penguin series

Matt Reeves, both director of The Batman and executive producer for The Penguin’s series, clarified why the superhero isn’t featured in the show. He mentioned that the series offers a distinct perspective from other characters since such a development cannot be depicted in movies told through Batman and Bruce Wayne’s viewpoints. Additionally, as it is The Penguin’s show, the main focus remains on developing his character.

In a similar vein, showrunner Lauren LeFranc shared with Screen Rant that the concept of crafting a series set in Gotham without Batman felt freeing to her. She elaborated that their primary aim was to develop an entertaining show centered around Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb, ensuring viewers wouldn’t feel the absence of Batman.

Beyond these points, another possible explanation for Pattinson’s absence could be linked to the potential rise in the show’s costs that his participation might necessitate. However, viewers are eagerly anticipating whether and how The Penguin might hint at Batman’s involvement amidst the conflict between the Falcone and Maroni gangs.
