Matlock episode 2 won't air in September, here's when the show returns!

As a seasoned gamer of life and television shows, let me tell you, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns, but the premiere of Matlock left me absolutely stunned! The character Matty, portrayed brilliantly by Kathy Bates, has already proven herself to be a formidable force in the legal world.

Matlock enjoyed a grand debut, but fans will have to wait some time before additional episodes air. Discover its return date instead!

Caution: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the Matlock series premiere

In the debut of the latest CBS series, we met Madeline “Matty” Matlock, portrayed by Kathy Bates, who is an elderly lady that became a part of the law firm Jacobson & Moor. Right off the bat, Matty couldn’t help but crack a joke about sharing her name with an old 1980s TV show.

Matty demonstrated that she could effortlessly leverage her senior status to acquire beneficial information for the company. Not long after, she found herself employed by Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), who was in the midst of a divorce from Julian (John Ritter), a son of Senior (Beau Bridges), one of the firm’s managing partners.

In this episode, I opened up about my challenging journey, from a life entangled with a compulsive gambler husband who passed away, to the heartbreaking loss of my daughter due to opioid overdose, and supporting my young grandson. Today was my first day at a new job, but duty called, and I had to catch a bus.

Next, an unexpected turn unfolded: Matty departed from the bus to meet a concealed vehicle in a secluded alley, intended for “Mrs. Kingston.” He transported her to a vast estate where her husband, surprisingly alive, was present with their grandson, Alfie. The nickname stemmed from his mother’s fondness for the classic Matlock TV series that she enjoyed watching with her parents.

The motive behind this deception? What Matty admitted truthfully was the tragic death of her daughter due to an opioid overdose. She suspects someone from Jacobson & Moore concealed documents that could have prevented these drugs from circulating earlier. This operation, in essence, was Matty disguising herself within the firm, concluding with her scrutinizing a wall of photos featuring Olympia, Julian, Senior, and others, intent on uncovering who was culpable.

In an unexpected turn, the series takes a fresh path as future episodes will find Matty persisting with her covert operation while employing her abilities in solving cases. However, the exact timing remains unclear.

When are new episodes of Matlock coming?

The show had a fantastic premiere with 7.7 million viewers, the highest for a non-Super Bowl CBS series debut since 2019. One might expect CBS to continue that momentum, but the show is taking a break.

The upcoming episode is scheduled to be broadcast on Thursday, October 17th, during its usual time of 10 PM or 9 PM Central Time. It’s unexpected to have such a delay, but it appears there must be valid explanations behind it.

CBS aimed to capitalize on the excitement of the Fall TV season by airing NFL football preceding the show “Matlock“, thereby attracting a larger viewership. This strategy made “Matlock” one of the earliest Fall network premieres, and the impressive ratings demonstrate its success. This tactic is reminiscent of how CBS debuted “Elsbeth” on February 29 to generate interest prior to its April airings of new episodes.

The network has been holding off on many of their big series premierals until mid-October. Consequently, Matlock will air as part of the regular Thursday programming. Postponing the show after its premiere might prove challenging, but it also generates more excitement due to that surprising finale twist and readies it for its subsequent run.

Fans will need to hold on a little longer to catch more of Matlock, but if the series maintains the excitement from its thrilling debut, it promises to be an engaging viewing experience.

Matlock returns Thursday, Oct. 17 at 10/9c on CBS.
