Maggie Smith Passes Away, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey Star Was 89

As a long-time admirer of Dame Maggie Smith, I am deeply saddened by the news of her passing. Her remarkable talent and unparalleled wit graced our screens for decades, and her characters will continue to live on in our hearts and memories.

Dame Maggie Smith has passed away. The Harry Potter and Downton Abbey star was 89.

With a heavy heart, Dame Maggie Smith’s sons shared the news of her passing through CNN. She passed away tranquilly in a hospital early on September 27th. Being extremely private, she was surrounded by friends and family at the time of her departure. Leaving behind two sons and five adoring grandchildren who are heartbroken over the loss of their remarkable mother and grandmother, we want to express our gratitude to the compassionate staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care and endless kindness during her final days.

Smith hails from Ilford, Essex, where she was born on December 28, 1934. From 1951 to 1953, she studied at the Oxford Playhouse School. Her first stage appearance came in a performance of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night staged by the Oxford University Dramatic Society.

She shone brightly in the world of theater during her entire professional journey. In 1990, she clinched the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for the production of Lettice and Lovage. Furthermore, she was often recognized with Tony Award nominations, as well as Laurence Olivier Awards.

Smith received Academy Awards for both Best Actress (for her role in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969) and Best Supporting Actress (for California Suite in 1978). Additionally, she was nominated for her acting performances in Othello (1965), Travels with My Aunt (1972), A Room with a View (1986), and Gosford Park (2001).

I’m renowned for embodying Minerva McGonagall within the magical world of Harry Potter and, equally as iconic, Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the grandeur of Downton Abbey.

Among my notable roles, you’ll find me starring in films like “Death on the Nile” (1978), “Hook” (1991), “The Secret Garden” (1993), “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2012), and “The Lady in the Van” (2015), to name a few.

ComingSoon sends condolences to Smith’s family and friends at this time.
