Battlefield 6: Everything we know so far

As someone who’s been through the trenches of Battlefield games since the early days of Bad Company, I must say I’m both excited and apprehensive about the next installment. The rollercoaster ride that has been the franchise lately is enough to make even the sturdiest gamer seasick. But alas, they’ve confirmed it, a new Battlefield game is on its way!

The latest installment of Battlefield, Battlefield 2042, turned out to be a major flop. In fact, even the recent Battlefield Mobile initiative was discontinued. To put it simply, the series is currently struggling and EA seems unsure about its future direction. However, they’re not giving up: They have officially announced that a new Battlefield game is under production.

Here is everything we know so far about the next Battlefield, including our release date expectation, the gameplay, and even the rumored BR.

Battlefield 6 release date prediction

It’s anticipated that Battlefield 6 may come out as early as 2026, considering its development started in 2021 and a new Battlefield game typically releases approximately every five years. We’ve noticed they’ve been hiring for this project for some time now. The latest we foresee for the release of the next Battlefield game is 2027, but it’s unlikely EA will extend Massive’s development timeline beyond that point.

Gameplay expected to deliver “back-to-basics” approach

Following the disappointing reception of Battlefield 2042, Vince Zampella, who leads Respawn Entertainment and serves as Group General Manager for EA Studios, has expressed a desire to create an experience similar to Battlefield 3 and 4. In line with this goal, Zampella has hinted that some classic features from these earlier games will make a comeback in the new title.

One significant adjustment will be reintroducing maps designed for up to 64 players, a move primarily driven by player feedback. In Battlefield 2042, the larger 128-player maps received criticism from gamers, prompting the developers to focus on supporting 64-player maps in the current version of Battlefield and this approach will continue in the upcoming game.

Another take on the Back-to-basics approach will be the return to four different classes, instead of having a specialist. Zampella said:

Not everybody liked it, but you got to try things. It didn’t work. It didn’t fit. Specialist will not be coming back. So classes are kind of at the core of Battlefield, and we’re going back to that.

Alongside the resumption of classes, a job posting from 2023 indicated a focus on developers with expertise in ecological damage. Therefore, it seems reasonable to anticipate an increase in such activities too.

In terms of gameplay, it seems reasonable to anticipate that the game will revert to multiplayer matches involving 64 players, emphasizing destruction and recreating the style of combat found in Battlefield 3 and 4, set during the contemporary period of warfare.

Battlefield Royale?

Absolutely! After decades of whispers about a Battlefield Battle Royale mode, and feeling let down when it didn’t materialize in Battlefield 2042, it appears that we might finally see it in Battlefield 6. Here’s hoping!

Currently, I’m thrilled to learn that four creative studios – DICE, Motive, Ripple Effect, and Criterion – are busy developing the upcoming Battlefield. Interestingly, it’s been reported by Gaming Insider that among these, Ripple Effect is focusing on a fresh free-to-play Battle Royale experience within the Battlefield universe.

As a devoted Battlefield fan, I wonder if this is truly the direction that the community desires. Time will tell, but I have my doubts, especially compared to the experience of Hazard Zone.

Are you excited about the next Battlefield game? Or did you give up hope after 2042?
