As a dedicated cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of cinema over the years, I find myself intrigued by Adam Driver’s perspective on Francis Ford Coppola’s latest masterpiece, Megalopolis. Despite the divided opinions among critics, Driver’s conviction that the film will gain appreciation over time resonates deeply with me.
Today marks the U.S. debut of “Megapolis,” a film that initially premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival on May 16. The movie has sparked quite a diverse response from critics, with an approval rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes after 146 reviews, and a score of 56 out of 100 on Metacritic following 50 reviews. Nonetheless, the film’s lead actor, Adam Driver, who plays Gaius Marius (Cesare Catilina in the movie), is optimistic that the audience’s appreciation for it will grow over time as opinions tend to “evolve.
Adam Driver talks how Megalopolis’ reception could change with multiple viewings
In the new movie by Francis Ford Coppola titled Megalopolis, Adam Driver plays the character of futuristic architect Cesar Catilina. Critical reviews for this film are quite mixed. Nonetheless, during an interview with Deadline, Driver expressed his belief that people’s opinions about the movie will change as more viewers see it multiple times.
According to Driver, Coppola follows the approach of “showing rather than telling” in his films. He further noted that Coppola prefers movies which don’t explicitly reveal the plot and instead allow room for audience interpretation. Instead, these films offer new insights over time as they evolve with the viewer or the world around them. Essentially, this is what Driver appreciates about most of Francis Coppola’s movies.
The driver once recollected his initial response after seeing Coppola’s Apocalypse Now (1979) for the first time. “I believe I saw Apocalypse Now at an age where I couldn’t fully grasp its complexities,” he admitted. At 14, he rented films from Blockbuster that he later needed to re-watch in order to truly comprehend them. Apocalypse Now received a mixed response upon its debut; however, over time, it has been widely recognized as a cinematic masterpiece by many viewers.
During the same interview, Driver praised the filming of Megalopolis as among the most rewarding productions of his acting career. “I was taken aback by the amount of freedom he offers to everyone, and he truly lives up to his ideals, putting his resources behind his words,” Driver stated. “In other words, since he’s the one directing it, there weren’t any unnecessary people interfering. As a result, Megalopolis was one of the best filming experiences I’ve ever had… This project and the movie Patterson stand out as my top two favorite experiences for entirely distinct reasons,” he concluded.
