Why Did Mira Murati Leave OpenAI? Exit Explained

As a long-time admirer of technological innovation and the brilliant minds that drive it, I find Mira Murati‘s decision to leave OpenAI as its CTO both intriguing and a bit sad. Her contributions to ChatGPT and DALL-E have been nothing short of groundbreaking, and her leadership at the company has been exemplary.

Mira Murati recently confirmed her departure from OpenAI following a nearly seven-year tenure with the AI firm. She initially joined as a researcher back in 2018, eventually rising through the ranks to become the Chief Technology Officer. Her work played a significant role in the development of ChatGPT and DALL-E technologies. As one of OpenAI’s most talented team members, she even temporarily assumed the role of CEO following Sam Altman’s departure in late 2023. Now, Murati has officially stepped down from her position as CTO, and here’s what led to her decision.

OpenAI’s CTO Mira Murati submits resignation

Mira Murati recently announced her exit from OpenAI in a detailed post shared on her X (formerly Twitter) handle on September 26. In the post, she revealed that after careful consideration she has decided to step down from her Chief Technology Officer position. Initially, she extended her thanks to individuals who allowed her to be a part of this extraordinary journey at OpenAI.

For over six-and-a-half years, I’ve felt incredibly fortunate to work with the OpenAI team. In the days ahead, I’ll take the time to thank numerous people for their contributions, but today I want to express my gratitude to Sam and Greg. They placed their trust in me to lead our technical department, and I’m grateful for their support during this journey. As we look back on the technological strides made during my tenure, I feel it’s the right moment for me to step away from the company and contemplate these advancements.

She explained that she was leaving due to a desire for new experiences and freedom. For the present, though, she’s concentrating on ensuring her departure from the company goes smoothly. Regrettably, she didn’t take the time to express her appreciation for the chance she had been given.

It seems like Murati might have left OpenAI due to recent organizational changes, which included high-ranking individuals stepping down from their roles. Previously, OpenAI’s board members chose for Sam Altman to vacate the CEO position last year. This decision was made following a review process that uncovered issues with Altman’s transparency in communication with board members.
