Major Chicago PD storylines to remember for season 12

As a seasoned gamer of crime dramas, having navigated through countless episodes of Chicago PD and its sister shows, I must say that the latest twist and turns in this series have left me both exhilarated and heartbroken. The 11th season finale was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride – from Hailey Upton’s divorce, to Burgess and Ruzek’s engagement, Torres’ questionable undercover decisions, and Atwater’s activist lover breakup. But the climax, with Voight’s harrowing ordeal at the hands of Matson, was a punch in the gut that left me breathless.

Chicago PD signed off with a powerful season 11 finale, so here’s what’s happening in season 12!

Similar to other NBC shows, Chicago PD experienced a postponement in its 11th season as a result of the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Fortunately, the series resumed production, and an engaging season unfolded with multiple storylines. Notably, Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) filed for divorce from Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), while Burgess and Ruzek finally took their relationship to the next level by getting engaged.

During an undercover operation, Torres became excessively engaged, developing romantic feelings for a gang leader’s spouse and subsequently using her as an informant. Similarly, Atwater found himself in a complicated relationship with an anti-police activist who ended their connection upon learning he was a police officer. However, the final episode of the season was emotionally charged and compelling.

What happened on the Chicago PD season 11 finale?

Voight found himself held captive by Matson (Dennis Flanagan), the serial killer the team had been tracking for months. Matson brutally tortured Voight, who found strength in a vision of his long-dead friend Al Olinsky (Elias Koteas).

The situation allowed the team to locate Voight after Matson injured Hailey, with Voight managing to escape his restraints to fatally attack him. In a heartfelt conversation, Voight and Upton reminisced about their bond, but it was clear that it was time for her to start anew.

Following careful consideration of proposals from the FBI, DEA, among others, Upton was spotted hailing a cab bound for O’Hare Airport, marking the start of a fresh chapter in her life.

Who’s out?

It appears that Tracy Spiridakos is no longer part of the series, as Upton has departed. Additionally, it remains unclear if Jo Petrovic (Bojana Novakovic), the SVU officer who seemed to be taking over from Upton, will continue to appear. Notably, Petrovic was shown entering rehab due to issues with alcohol affecting her job performance.

Who’s in?

In no time, Upton’s vacant position will be filled when Intelligence brings on patrol officer Kiana Cook, portrayed by Toya Turner, as their newest recruit. Additionally, Shawn Hatosy is set to reappear in a recurring role, playing Deputy Chief Charlie Reid, whose methods for dealing with Voight and the team’s cases could offer an intriguing twist.

What’s coming in Chicago PD season 12?

As a dedicated fan, I can express that in the aftermath of my own trials and tribulations, Voight appears to be taking a more thoughtful and reflective approach. According to TVLine’s showrunner Gwen Sigan, this is the case. Meanwhile, Cook, who’s been through her fair share within the police department, seems to be on a quest for belonging. As we move into the 21st season, she’s searching for a sense of family and camaraderie.

In their busy schedule, Burgess and Ruzek might be preparing for a wedding, so viewers can look forward to special episodes focusing on them. Additionally, Atwater could potentially find himself in a new romantic situation, but the details are yet to be revealed, as the team shifts back to resolving smaller cases instead of the extended narratives from the past two seasons.

With a few fresh police officers joining the team and some intriguing changes in character interactions, this upcoming season promises an exciting journey for our popular show!

Chicago PD season 12 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 10/9c on NBC.
