PlayStation State of Play recap: Ghost of Tsushima 2, Hitman in VR & Alan Wake DLC

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must admit that Sony’s latest State of Play left me absolutely thrilled! The sequel to Ghost of Tsushima set in the mystical Yōtei, titled Ghost of Yōtei, is just the cherry on top of an already impressive lineup. It’s been a while since I’ve delved into a new open-world samurai adventure, and Atsu’s tale promises to be an exhilarating journey.

During their latest State of Play event, Sony shared updates about more than twenty distinct video games. Most notably, they unveiled a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima and additional content for Alan Wake.

Ghost of Yōtei releasing next year

It’s no wonder that, following the massive acclaim of Sucker Punch’s initial Ghost of Tsushima release, we can anticipate a sequel to the game, slated for 2025. The upcoming title will be set in Yōtei instead of Tsushima and will introduce a new protagonist named Atsu.

The sequel is expected to take place 300 years after the original storyline of Ghost of Tsushima.

Astro Bot receiving free content update

Astro Bot is now available, and it seems to be a strong contender for Game of the Year! The makers, Team Sobi, expressed their gratitude towards the community at the State of Play event and revealed that there will be a complimentary content update for Astro Bot, due later this year.

The latest content upgrade is set to introduce five fresh speed challenges for Sony’s tiny robot, along with ten new robots to save. In the preview, you can catch a glimpse of a soldier from Helldivers 2 and Eve from Stellar Blade, who will appear as rescueable bots.

Alan Wake 2 DLC confirmed for October

In the forthcoming (paid) downloadable content for Alan Wake 2, scheduled for release in October, everyone’s preferred FBC agent, Kiran Estevez, will be moving to a fresh location.

The trailer implies that organizations significant in Remedy’s previous hit game, Control, could have a substantial role in the plot.

We’re particularly eager for the upcoming release of Alan Wake 2, as it promises to be one of the most engaging storyline games so far on PlayStation 5.

Monster Hunter Wilds finally gets a release date

As a diehard Monster Hunter fan, I can’t contain my excitement! Finally, Capcom has unveiled that the next installment in our beloved series is set to drop on February 28, 2025. In the same exhilarating announcement, they also teased us with two brand-new monsters to conquer: The Uth Duna, a fascinating hybrid of fish and dragon, and the Arkveld, another dragon-like beast that seems destined to be the showstopper in Wilds. Can’t wait to embark on new adventures!

A Hitman VR game is on the way

Agent 47 will make his debut on PlayStation VR 2 in December 2025, offering players an immersive VR adventure as the renowned assassin. You’ll have the chance to choke, shoot or poison your targets from the perspective of this masterful killer.

This one might be a bit too much for VR, but we’re keeping an open-mind for now.

Remasters galore: Horizon, Soul Reaver & Lunar

Of course, Sony also announced a number of major remasters for the PS5.

Standout fact: Sony is launching a PlayStation 5 adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn. If the game is already in your collection, you can upgrade to its PS5 version on October 31, 2024, for just $9.99. However, it’s important to note that this updated version will only be available for PlayStation users, as the original will also release on PC but at full price.

They additionally unveiled a few popular PS3 games that are set to receive remastering and collection packaging. The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1-2 is scheduled for release on December 10, 2024, and it appears fantastic.

If you’re a fan of the retro era, Sony has announced the release of the Lunar Remastered Collection, featuring Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue. This compilation of timeless JRPGs is set to launch on both PS4 and PS5 in Spring 2025.
