Tamil director Mohan G gets bail after his arrest over controversial remarks on Pazhani Panchamirtham: REPORT

As someone who closely follows the Tamil cinema industry, I have always admired the tenacity and unconventional approach of directors like Mohan G. His journey from crowdfunding his first film to making hits like Draupathi is indeed inspiring. However, recent events surrounding him have been a cause for concern.

Trigger warning: This article mentions hurting religious sentiments.

Previously, film director Mohan G found himself in police custody due to his provocative comments about a sacred drink called Panchamirtham at the Pazhani temple in Tamil Nadu. On September 24, he was held by the Cybercrime Police of Trichy District. Now, it appears that he has been released on bail after being taken into custody in Chennai.

For those unaware, Mohan G was detained from his residence in Chennai following a contentious statement suggesting disrespect towards religious sentiments. According to news outlets, he asserted that the offerings (prasadam) at the Pazhani temple might contain contraceptive substances. This claim stirred significant outrage among the public.

In response to these accusations, Kaviarasu – the manager of the Samayapuram temple – lodged a complaint against the director under five distinct sections. As stated in a report by TOI, Mohan G was taken into custody at his residence without any prior warning given to him or his family members.

After the turn of events, I found myself in a courtroom, witnessing the continuation of the case against Mohan G. Yet, the honorable judge voiced his disapproval towards the police officers’ hasty and improper arrest of Mohan G, thus granting him temporary freedom until due process could be properly followed.

Yesterday, the BJP President in Chennai likewise raised concerns about Mohan G’s detention through a post on their social media account, stating, “No official details were provided to the family regarding the reason for his arrest or the nature of the case. This contradicts the ruling of the Supreme Court.

Nonetheless, more details about Mohan G’s case are still awaited.

In terms of his professional life, Mohan G primarily focuses on the Tamil film industry. He started off as a director in 2016, and his debut movie was titled Pazhaya Vannarapettai. Following this, he went on to direct movies like Rudra Thandavamm Draupathi, Bakasuran, among others.

Initially facing criticism, the movie titled Draupathi eventually proved successful. Remarkably, it didn’t receive backing from any producers and instead relied on crowd-funding for its production.
