Roman Sinquerra, High Potential's central mystery and his importance to Morgan

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the intricate plots and character arcs of mystery games, I find myself captivated by the premise of ABC’s new series, High Potential. The life experiences of Morgan Guillory, a genius with a knack for solving puzzles that have left others baffled, resonate deeply with my own gaming journey.

In ABC’s newest procedural drama, we meet Morgan Guillory, an LAPD cleaner with a remarkable intellect who cracks one of their cases. Her instinctive urge to correct wrongs leads her to reorganize their murder board during the investigation. By the end of the case, this action paves the way for her to take on a consulting role within the department.

At first, Morgan hesitates about the job offer, but eventually sees potential advantages not only for herself financially, but also for her family. Moreover, she may have an opportunity to unravel a mystery that has puzzled her for 15 years – the disappearance of Ramon Sinquerra. Previously, we’ve caught glimpses during the pilot case of how this case is intertwined with her personal life.

Morgan empathized deeply with Letty, the daughter of the person who vanished without a trace, and Lynette Acosta, who is currently missing. She too has gone through the heartache of losing someone, Ramon, Ava’s father, whom she believes didn’t abandon them one night when he was supposed to get diapers. Despite others doubting her, even her own daughter, Morgan remains steadfast in her pursuit of uncovering the truth behind his disappearance.

The significance of her pursuit lies in providing answers that could greatly impact Ava, who often feels isolated due to not fitting in with her family. Her brother, Elliot, is exceptionally intelligent, similar to Morgan, while their baby sister is too young to show signs of advanced cognitive abilities. It’s unclear if she will share the same talents, but they do share the same father. Ava is also the only person of color in the family, which further intensifies her feelings of otherness. In every aspect, she feels distinct and apart from the rest.

As a gamer, I completely understand Morgan’s desire for Ava not to feel adrift, lonely, and abandoned. Unraveling the enigma surrounding Ramon’s fate might not instantly mend how Ava feels if he’s deceased, but it could offer some closure. Maybe she’d realize her mom was right, that Ramon wanted her, and it was something or someone that snatched him away from us, not his choice to depart. But remember, there are bound to be a few unexpected turns along the way.

In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Todd Harthan teased what’s coming regarding Ramon:

Morgan is about to find out some things she didn’t know about the person she was sharing her life with, the person she had a child with. Morgan is somebody who notices everything, all the details, but we all have blind spots, right? As the season goes on, we’ll start to unpack some things about who this man was and what he might have been doing that she wasn’t aware of.

Although this situation seems foreboding, it offers an intriguing exploration of Morgan’s character. When Lt. Soto spoke with her, she made clear that her special abilities aren’t a blessing, but rather a challenge that has hindered her in holding conversations, securing employment, and maintaining relationships. So, how did Ramon succeed in conveying secrets without being detected by her? Was it due to her overlooking warning signs or indicators? Or could it be that Ramon himself was endowed with unique abilities as well? Unraveling the enigma of Ramon Sinquerra will make for an engaging journey throughout the season.
