Dominic Rains' send-off on Chicago Med may disappoint fans

As a seasoned gamer of medical dramas, I’ve seen my fair share of comings and goings, but the departure of Dr. Crockett Marcel from Chicago Med feels like a punch to the gut. I’ve been riding this rollercoaster with Dominic Rains for what seems like an eternity, and his character has become a staple in the series. The thought that he won’t be there to guide us through another day at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center leaves me feeling a bit lost, much like the patients who rely on these dedicated doctors.

The highly anticipated tenth season of “Chicago Med” will premiere on Wednesday, September 25, however, it won’t feature Dominic Rains reprising his role as Dr. Crockett Marcel this time around.

Fans have been anticipating Rain’s exit from the medical drama since it was announced he wouldn’t be a regular anymore. They had hoped for a fitting farewell scene, but it appears that won’t happen.

During a conversation with One Chicago Center, showrunner Allen MacDonald revealed that Dominic will not appear at the beginning of Season 10, and we provide an explanation for his absence quite promptly.

In simpler terms, Crockett’s exit will probably be clarified through some dialogue exchanges or discussions between characters. This is a common storytelling approach often used in series like this. MacDonald’s reasoning for this method becomes clear when we consider what happened at the end of season 9.

The reason I decided to do that was just simply I felt that Dr. Crockett Marcel had already been written out at the end of last season. It was left in a way that he could come back or if he left, it was understandable that he had some issues of his own that he needed to work out in terms of his grieving process for the loss of his daughter. I didn’t really feel there was a need to bring him back to write him out because I felt that had been done.

In one of Crockett’s difficult cases, a patient’s father tragically ended his life after Crockett decided against performing an operation on their child due to infection. The operation was a liver transplant for the child. Despite the father’s desperate pleas, Crockett chose not to proceed and, unfortunately, the boy passed away. Overwhelmed by grief, the father took his own life.

The incident stirred deep emotions within Crockett, as it brought back memories of when his daughter was battling leukemia and eventually passed away. He had felt powerless during that difficult period in his life. It dawned on him that he hadn’t fully processed his grief or dealt with the trauma from that experience. Given this realization, it is understandable that Crockett will be taking the time necessary for healing.

The departure of one doctor on Chicago Med is followed by the arrival of two new ones. Sarah Ramos portrays Dr. Caitlin Lenox, an Emergency Department Attending with a knack for identifying areas that require improvement within the hospital. In the season opener, she’ll be managing the surge of patients from a boat accident at Navy Pier. Darren Barnet is also part of the cast as Dr. John Frost, a pediatric resident who conceals a hidden truth.

About a potential comeback of Rains on the show, it’s always possible. This medical drama often invites back familiar faces, and creator McDonald is keen to maintain this pattern, although currently, there are no definitive plans for recurring characters.
