As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of gaming from a solitary pastime to a dynamic, interconnected world. I’ve seen the rise of esports, the emergence of virtual reality, and now, the unionization of voice actors in the gaming industry.
At the moment, SAG-AFTRA is engaged in a work stoppage within the video game industry, demanding a fresh contract that benefits their voice actors and performers. The union has officially declared a walkout for League of Legends, and they’ve also filed an allegation of unfair labor practices against Formosa Interactive. This is because the company is accused of attempting to bypass the ongoing strike in some way.
Today, SAG-AFTRA declared a strike against League of Legends, but the conflict isn’t with Riot Games, the primary developer and publisher. Instead, it’s with Formosa Interactive LLC., a company contracted for additional work on numerous popular games. According to SAG-AFTRA, after the announcement of the voice actor strike, Formosa attempted to cancel an ongoing project, then sought to hire non-union workers when this move was prevented.
Sarah Elmaleh, chair of the Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee, issued a statement following the announcement about the planned strike.
So far, neither Formosa Interactive nor Riot Games has issued any statements regarding the issue. We’re closely monitoring the developments as we wait to see how the allegations of unfair labor practices will unfold.
