911: Lone Star boss dashes hope of seeing Grace in the series finale

As a dedicated fan of 911: Lone Star, I’ve been following this show since its inception and have grown quite fond of the characters, particularly Grace (portrayed by Sierra McClain). The recent turn of events regarding her departure has left me feeling rather disheartened.

In the season premiere of “911: Lone Star,” Grace had to be written off, but could there possibly be an opportunity for her character to reappear in the final episode?

The debut for the last season of the show occurred approximately a year following the season 4 conclusion. Despite this, Carlos and TK were holding up relatively well. However, Carlos, now serving as a Texas Ranger, had been deeply engrossed in investigating his father’s murder, Gabriel. Meanwhile, Owen grappled with his brother’s demise and ended his relationship with Kendra. On the other hand, Paul and Marjan were vying to assume Judd’s position as lieutenant.

Regarding Judd, he was currently residing at home, now sharing space with his son Wyatt who had recently joined them. Wyatt took up a position at the dispatch center, while Grace had left to engage in missionary work. Although Grace understood that this wasn’t an ideal time, she felt compelled to embark on this journey. Judd supports her decision, acknowledging its inconvenience but recognizing her strong desire to fulfill this calling.

As a gamer, I found myself taken aback when Sierra McClain suddenly parted ways with the series. This unexpected departure left quite an impact as it forced the writers to weave a plausible tale for why Grace would abandon her 2-year-old and Judd to aid Wyatt, who now relies on a wheelchair.

In an interview with Variety, one of the showrunners, Rashad Raisani, expressed his hope that McClain might appear during the last season, but unfortunately, it didn’t come to fruition.

Sierra is the soul of “Lone Star,” and she is so central to what the show is all about, that I didn’t ever want to think about doing the show without her. And for a minute, it looked like it might work out — and even two or three weeks before production, we thought there was a chance, and then it just ended up not being in the cards. So it forced us to have to pivot and it was very difficult. I felt it was critical to both protect the character of Grace and actress Sierra McClain — I adore both of them. The challenge was, how do you explain her absence in a way it doesn’t involve just sort of mindlessy killing her off, which I think would have just been a travesty, or doing something like: she left Judd, divorced him, or something kind of gross like that — which I think nobody would believe. So that became our challenge as to how to explain it away, or at least explain it to level that we could continue the show. And I’ll let the audience decide if we did — I think we did.

According to Raisani, eliminating Grace altogether might have been overly dramatic. Instead, this alternative approach effectively conveys that she’s continuing to assist others off-screen, keeping the door open for a possible future appearance. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that we’ll see her return on the screen.

Is Grace coming back for the 911: Lone Star finale?

Raisani clarified that, as far as they were concerned, it was clear this would be the last season. Although they wanted more, they had accepted this as the final year and planned the finale accordingly. This left little time to arrange for McClain’s cameo in the finale, so unfortunately, she won’t make an appearance.

Unfortunately, we’ve already shot [the series finale]. I held out hope until the last minute, I’ll put it that way. I do think that, without seeing her on screen, how satisfying could anything be? But short of that, I’m just immensely proud of where the show goes.

It’s a bit disappointing that Grace won’t return or have a fitting farewell, despite the fact that her departure through missionary work wasn’t through the easy route of character death. Although I understand McClain’s choice and appreciate the writers’ efforts, it’s still frustrating to see this storyline play out.

If given another season, McClain might have reappeared, but since the series 911: Lone Star is beginning its last journey, it will lack one of its standout characters for now.

911: Lone Star season 5 airs Mondays at 8/7c on Fox.
