Boden's exit from Chicago Fire has a big impact on season 13, here's how things have changed

As a long-time fan of Chicago Fire, I must say that season 12 was quite a rollercoaster ride! From Blake Gallo’s departure to Sylvie Brett’s exit, and the dramatic turn of events for Herrmann, it seemed like every episode was filled with unexpected twists. But the season finale took the cake, revealing a bombshell that will undoubtedly shake up the show in a major way!

In the twelfth season of Chicago Fire, there were significant changes. The opening episode marked Alberto Rosendale’s Blake Gallo saying farewell to relocate with his family in Detroit. Midway through the season, Kara Killmer exited after her character Sylvie Brett tied the knot with Matt Casey. Additionally, there were tense moments, like Casey Hawkins (Herrmann) experiencing hearing loss and needing to use hearing aids.

However, the season 12 finale was a bigger turn that will shake up the show majorly!

What happened in the Chicago Fire season 12 finale?

Recognizing that appointing Robinson as Deputy Commissioner would be catastrophic, Boden decided to compete for the position. Thanks to Kidd’s heartfelt speech, Boden secured the job, which was a fitting recognition for his long years of dedication. However, this new role meant leaving 51, and Boden made it known that he believed Herrmann would make an excellent successor.

Mouch decided to attempt the lieutenant’s test, whereas Damon engaged in a violent altercation with an abusive parent. Meanwhile, Violet argued with Carver over her feelings for Kidd, only for him to reveal his affection for her by saying “I can’t because I’ve fallen for you.” On the other hand, Kidd and Severide were discussing the topic of children.

The final scene had Damon explaining to Severide that he’d been triggered by that father because he’d grown up under an abusive and abrasive dad…named Benny Severide. Yep, Damon is the half-brother Severide never knew he had.

Cast exit and additions

Who’s out?

Although Eamonn Walker may no longer appear as a regular character, it seems that Boden could still make occasional appearances to assist the team.

Who’s coming?

The season 13 premiere has Dermot Mulroney joining as the new firehouse chief, Dom Pascal. A former Chicago firefighter, he returns to the Windy City to try and rebuild his life. He’ll have a new style for the team with KaDee Strickland playing his estranged wife, Monica.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been elevated to a full-fledged regular in the series alongside Jake Lockett and Jocelyn Hudson, who play paramedics Layla Novak on our show. What an exciting journey it has been so far, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

What’s set to happen in season 13?

The first episode resumes six weeks later following the finale, as showrunner Andrea Newman shares with TVLine that the disclosure of Severide’s half-brother has quite an impact on him, causing him to grapple with significant choices. Meanwhile, Cruz isn’t thrilled by this development due to her personal issues with her brother Leon, and Stella is dealing with family complications as well.

The entire team is adjusting to Pascal, who’s set on showcasing a distinct leadership approach compared to Boden. Meanwhile, Herrmann continues grappling with his hearing issues, opting not to assume the Captain role yet due to the requirement of taking the Battalion Chief test first. It seems that the bond between Herrmann and Mouch may face strains as they both vie for higher positions within the department. On another note, Violet and Carver are navigating their relationship complexities, while Ritter takes center stage this season, offering insights into Novak’s motivations and work ethos.

It seems like an extensive period of transformation lies ahead for the Chicago Fire, promising an exciting year for their supporters.

Chicago Fire season 13 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c on NBC.
