What to expect for Rhaena in House of the Dragon Season 3 based on the book

As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of George R.R. Martin’s works, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension as I delve into the intricacies of House of the Dragon Season 2. The transformation of Rhaena Targaryen into Nettles has left me with a sense of nostalgia tinged with disappointment, as Nettles’ storyline was one of the most captivating in Fire & Blood.

Occasionally, when I dive into a show based on a book, I find that the narrative takes an unexpected turn. This happened with Rhaena Targaryen’s storyline in House of the Dragon‘s second season for me.

In George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, Rhaena Targaryen doesn’t play an active role during the Dance of the Dragons. Instead, she stays put in the Vale throughout the conflict, having initially planned to escort Prince Joffrey Velaryon to Gulltown for safety. During this period, Rhaena longed for her dragon egg to hatch, as she was yet to acquire a dragon mount.

It’s not too unexpected, given the potential for dullness, that the show chose to alter events instead for Rhaena’s storyline.

Rhaena has taken on the role of Nettles in House of the Dragon

It appears that Rhaena has assumed the character of Nettles in House of the Dragon Season 2, which might be considered an adjustment that some fans could find dissatisfying. This is because, unlike Nettles, Rhaena doesn’t possess the unique aspect of being a dragonseed who has bonded with a dragon – specifically Sheepstealer – by winning his trust through feeding him sheep.

Towards the finale of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, Rhaena ventured into the untamed lands of the Vale in search of a dragon she’d only heard tales about. She eventually encountered this mythical beast, but we were left uncertain as to whether she managed to tame it or not.

In the third season of “House of the Dragon,” Rhaena’s narrative might unfold as she endeavors to win Sheepstealer’s confidence by employing a unique approach involving sheep. Here’s hoping the show preserves this aspect, as it underscores the possibility of domesticing even the most untamed dragons.

Could Rhaena fight by Daemon’s side in House of the Dragon Season 3?

In the tale of Fire & Blood, Nettles’ narrative intertwines with Daemon’s. Eventually, they find themselves journeying together through the Riverlands. Despite his intentions to eliminate Aemond, Daemon also shows a protective side towards Nettles. There exists a rumor that Daemon and Nettles were involved in a romantic relationship. When Daemon discovered Rhaenyra’s plan to execute her, he secreted Nettles away for safety, and since then, she has not been seen again.

From a devoted fan’s perspective, it’s quite intriguing to speculate that Daemon and Rhaena might join forces in the storyline. This shift could potentially bypass the complications arising from their familial ties, as they are father and daughter. Such a change would also mean a softening of any potential threats Rhaenyra may pose towards Rhaena’s life. However, even with this adjustment, Daemon’s protective instincts would surely intensify if he recognizes striking similarities between his daughter and his late wife Laena in her character.

If he believed that Aemond or another person posed a threat, he would undoubtedly send Rhaena away. This action might bring Rhaena back to Court during the remainder of the Fire & Blood narrative, following the deaths of many Blacks and Greens.

It’s possible that Sheepstealer may perish during a battle, considering that Rhaena ultimately possesses the final dragon egg (prior to Daenerys in “Game of Thrones”). Here’s hoping the storyline doesn’t rob us of this significant and miraculous moment!
