Dune: Prophecy Will Focus on a Woman’s Rise to Power, Says Showrunner

As a fan who has delved deep into the intricate world of Dune for decades, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming series, “Dune: Prophecy“. The prospect of witnessing the rise of the Harkonnens and exploring the origins of the Bene Gesserit is a tantalizing proposition that promises to expand our understanding of this rich universe.

As a diehard fan, I can’t contain my excitement for the upcoming “Dune: Prophecy”! Unlike the usual coming-of-age tales, this time we’ll delve into the gripping saga of one of the most influential houses and factions in the Dune universe, as they ascend to power.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dune: Prophecy’s executive producer Alison Schapker provided a glimpse into the upcoming HBO series. She mentioned that the show serves as a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film and will delve into the rise of the Harkonnens, specifically focusing on Valkya Harkonnen’s (portrayed by Emily Watson) ascent to power.

Schapker explained that we’ll witness the origins, ‘We get to see how it all began.’ At the outset, Valya Harkonnen is introduced as a girl whose family has suffered an immense decline in power and lost their noble title. She yearns for restoration of what she believes is rightfully hers. The transformation of this character, from being fixated on reestablishing her noble lineage to becoming fully committed to the Sisterhood, plays a significant role in the plot. This isn’t so much a tale of a girl maturing into adulthood as it is a story of a woman claiming power, told from the Harkonnen perspective.

What do we know about Dune: Prophecy?

In the vast cosmos of Dune, penned by renowned author Frank Herbert, lies a tale titled Dune: Prophecy, set 10,000 years prior to Paul Atreides’ rise. This narrative focuses on two Harkonnen sisters who battle against forces jeopardizing humanity’s destiny and lay the groundwork for the revered Bene Gesserit order. As suggested by the novel ‘Sisterhood of Dune,’ written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, this story is an inspiration.

In addition to Strong, the cast of Dune: Prophecy includes Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Jihae, Tabu, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, and Yerin Ha.

Alison Schapker is the head of Dune: Prophecy, with the responsibility of overseeing its production. Joining her in this role as executive producers are Diane Ademu-John, Anna Foerster, Jordan Goldberg, Mark Tobey, John Cameron, Matthew King, Scott Z. Burns, Jon Spaihts, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert. Meanwhile, Kevin J. Anderson takes on the role of co-producer for the series.
