What to expect for Vhagar in House of the Dragon Season 3 based on the book

As a die-hard fan of the Targaryen legacy and having devoured every bit of lore related to Westeros, I can confidently say that Vhagar, the oldest and largest dragon in Westeros, is set for an epic yet tragic journey in House of the Dragon.

In the series House of the Dragon, Vhagar has already experienced some significant events. The oldest and largest dragon in Westeros still has many more exciting moments ahead.

Aemond Targaryen’s struggle for his brother’s throne persists, and he dreams of being the Prince Regent, enjoying its power. However, a surprising plot against him has emerged from within his inner circle, causing his progress to slow drastically.

Regardless of where Aemond travels, his dragon Vhagar will accompany him. This implies that the she-dragon’s movements and destiny are closely tied to her rider, Aemond. To learn more about their future, we can refer to “Fire & Blood” by George R.R. Martin for further details.

Vhagar will meet the same end as Aemond in House of the Dragon Season 3

It’s my belief that by the conclusion of Season 3 of “House of the Dragon,” Aemond and his dragon Vhagar will meet their demise. It’s heartbreaking for Vhagar, as she seems to be nothing more than an instrument carrying out commands without much autonomy in battle.

Despite her gruff demeanor, it’s clear that she’s an old, cranky woman. This was evident in the final episode of “House of the Dragon” Season 1 when she disobeyed Aemond’s orders and ended up killing Arrax, Lucarys’ dragon. Moreover, her status as a war dragon suggests that she has no qualms about showing ruthlessness, as demonstrated by her actions against Meleys at Rook’s Rest.

In the near future, there’s another major battle for Vhagar on the horizon – the Battle Above the God’s Eye. This time, Vhagar will team up with Aemond and they’ll be facing off against Daemon and his dragon, Caraxes. However, before that epic encounter, Vhagar will join forces with Aemond to eliminate the Black strongholds in the Riverlands.

Vhagar engages in relentless combat until the very end. She manages to gash Caraxes’s underside and tear away one of its wing attachments, but Caraxes retaliates, clawing at Vhagar’s throat. In a fierce struggle, Caraxes latches onto Vhagar’s neck, causing both dragons to plummet into the water.

After Caraxes manages to escape the water, albeit perishing at Harrenhal’s walls, Vhagar plunges into the depths of God’s Eye, as foretold by Helaena. This is where Aemond meets his end. It’s not until many decades later that Vhagar and the remains of Aemond are retrieved from the water. Even in death, Aemond remains bound to Vhagar.
