Sublime Biopic to Star Riverdale’s KJ Apa, Director Revealed

As a gamer with an eclectic taste in music and a soft spot for biopics, I am absolutely thrilled about KJ Apa being cast as Bradley Nowell in the upcoming Sublime biopic! Growing up listening to Sublime’s unique blend of reggae, punk, ska, and more, their tunes were an integral part of my gaming soundtrack.

As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled to share that KJ Apa, who brings Riverdale’s Archie Andrews to life so brilliantly and excelled in One Fast Move, has been chosen for the lead role in the upcoming Sublime biopic! The director behind the critically acclaimed Blue Bayou is set to helm this project.

Back in 1988, a musical gem called Sublime was born right here in Long Beach, California. This band has an extraordinary knack for blending various genres such as reggae, punk, ska, and more, creating a unique sound that resonates deeply with me. Some of their evergreen tunes are “Pawn Shop,” “What I Got,” “Badfish,” “Caress Me Down,” “Rivers Of Babylon,” “Summertime,” and “Garden Grove.” These tracks, along with others, have left an indelible mark on the music scene.

Presently, Sublime is made up of Eric Wilson, Bud Gaugh, and Jakob Nowell. Jakob became a part of the group in 2023, assuming the role as the band’s lead vocalist that Bradley Nowell held before him. Sadly, Bradley passed away in 1996 at the age of 28.

As reported by Deadline, Apa has been chosen to play the role of Bradley in the upcoming biopic. It’s mentioned that he put in more than a year of effort to secure this role, ultimately winning it due to his unwavering commitment to the part. The production of this feature is currently underway.

Who else is involved in the Sublime biopic?

Originating at 3000 Pictures, this biographical movie is set to be helmed by director Justin Chon. He will not only oversee the filming but also pen the script, which is based on a preliminary draft penned by Chris Mundy. The script will also receive contributions from screenwriter Bobby Hundreds.

In the project, you’ll find three producers from Chernin Entertainment: Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready. The band members Gaugh and Wilson will be joined by Troy Nowell and Jakob as executive producers, representing Bradley’s estate. Also on board are Francis Lawrence and Jamie Spetner as additional executive producers.

Known for portraying Archie Andrews on Riverdale (a series on The CW), this actor initially rose to fame with his role in the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street. He has also appeared in The Cul de Sac, A Dog’s Purpose, The Hate U Give, The Last Summer, I Still Believe, Dead Reckoning, and Songbird.

In the action movie “One Fast Move,” directed by Kelly Blatz, his most recent undertaking features him sharing the screen with Eric Dane.
