According to an article in India Today, doctors at a government hospital carried out a complex brain operation on a 55-year-old woman named Anantalakshmi. During the operation, they played Jr NTR’s film, Adhurs, on a tablet for her entertainment. This helped her relax, and the surgery, which lasted about two and a half hours, went without complications.
For those not familiar with the term, this distinctive surgical method is referred to as ‘awake craniotomy‘. This means that the patient stays alert and responsive during a complex medical operation. In simpler medical terms, an awake craniotomy, or awake brain surgery, is a brain operation conducted while the patient remains conscious. Initially developed for epilepsy treatment, it’s now commonly used to remove brain tumors as well.
During an “awake” brain operation, the patient stays conscious and can interact with the surgical staff. This ensures the surgeon doesn’t inadvertently harm parts of the brain that oversee essential functions. An “awake craniotomy” enables the surgeon to assess the brain before making any major changes and to observe the patient’s functioning during the entire procedure.
Coming back to Anantalakshmi, the A Kothapalli resident was diagnosed with a brain tumor after she complained of symptoms like numbness in her limbs and persistent headaches. The woman was diagnosed with a 3.3 x 2.7 cm tumor on the left side of her brain. She opted for a government hospital due to expensive treatment costs at private hospitals. At present, the doctors have successfully removed the tumor while ensuring the patient’s comfort.
