High Potential showrunner gives a definitive answer on whether or not Morgan and Karadec will have a romance

As a fan who has binge-watched countless mystery series over the years and developed a keen eye for spotting romantic subplots, I must say that ABC’s new show, High Potential, is off to an intriguing start. The pilot episode introduced us to the quirky and brilliant Morgan Guillory (Kaitlin Olson), whose life experiences have left her with a unique perspective on the world and a knack for solving puzzles that even the LAPD can’t figure out.

Has the new show “High Potential” premiered on ABC with an intriguing detective character who solves mysteries? Could there possibly be some romantic elements added to the plot as well? The show’s creator has shared their thoughts!

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for the High Potential premiere

In a new ABC series, the lead character, played by Kaitlin Olson (Morgan Guillory), is introduced as a single mom who works as a cleaner at an LAPD police station. Surprisingly, during a playful moment, Morgan alters a murder board to suggest that the suspect believed to have murdered a wealthy man might actually be the victim themselves.

As Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) escorted me into the room, I stepped up, ready to share my insights on the case that had the cops stumped. I explained how the evidence they were working with had been tampered with, and a so-called video of a suspect was doctored.

Recognizing her talent (pun understood), Lieutenant Selena Soto (played by Judy Reyes) brings Morgan along on an investigation with Karadec. Their working relationship is strained due to Karadec’s traditional approach to policing, which is put to the test by Morgan’s unorthodox methods like stealing evidence that eventually proves useful in court. At a certain point, Karadec insists they part ways, but ultimately acknowledges Morgan’s wisdom and together they rescue a kidnapped individual from the hands of the wrongdoers.

Selena offered Morgan a job as an official consultant, which she resisted at first. However, she agreed on the condition that she gets help trying to find her missing ex Roman, who vanished 15 years ago. While everyone (including their daughter Ava) thinks the guy just ran off, Morgan is convinced something happened to him and will work with the LAPD if it means finding out the truth.

The flight was lively and entertaining, showcasing Morgan’s charisma and playful interactions with Karadec. Could there potentially be a romantic angle developed within the storyline of the series?

Is there going to be a Morgan-Karadec romance on High Potential?

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the intriguing “will they or won’t they” relationship tension between the leads in ABC mystery shows, such as with Castle. This has me pondering if the writers are subtly preparing Morgan and Karadec for a romantic pairing. In fact, showrunner Todd Harthan even shared his thoughts on this intriguing possibility with TVLine.

I am notorious for playing these things slowly. [[We’ll start to see]] a growing respect and friendship between them, and that’s what you’ll fall in love with [as a viewer] before the characters ever fall in love with each other. Of course we’re going to have those moments, those looks, and fan those flames. But to me, it’s got to be a slow burn. We’ve got to do it right and earn it.

In this initial episode, we haven’t seen enough interactions between Morgan and Karadec for their dynamic to fully develop. The pilot introduces them having disagreements, with Karadec expressing disapproval of Morgan’s unconventional methods and sometimes bending the rules to solve cases. Moreover, Morgan seems to perceive Karadec’s idiosyncrasies, such as his excessive hand-sanitizing due to OCD. However, while respect might be growing between them, a romantic relationship is certainly not on the horizon yet.

As a gamer, I’ll confess that Morgan’s got a knack for puzzles, but when it comes to relationships, she’s a bit of a challenge. Her overactive mind, always chasing trivia and details, often leaves her struggling to connect with folks. On the job, though, she’s sharp as a tack, particularly when we’re unraveling mysteries together with Karadec. However, outside these enigmas, I’m not sure if we’ll manage to strike up a deeper bond.

Currently, viewers are treated to Olson’s exuberantly eccentric act and the enigmatic allure that solidifies High Potential as another triumph in ABC’s crime series collection.

High Potential airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on ABC.
