Why People Think The Stranger Is Saruman in The Rings of Power

As a hardcore Tolkien fan and long-time gamer with countless hours spent exploring Middle-earth in various video games, I’ve been eagerly awaiting Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The mystery surrounding the Stranger has certainly piqued my interest, especially given the theories suggesting he might be Saruman.

In a different yet straightforward manner: Amazon Prime Video’s show titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is set thousands of years prior to J.R.R. Tolkien’s books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Characters from these works, like Saruman, have left readers and moviegoers curious about his whereabouts during this time. In the initial episode of the series, we encounter an enigmatic character known as the Stranger, who arrives in Middle-earth on a meteor, leading some to speculate that this could be none other than Saruman.

Here is everything you need to know about whether the Stranger is Saruman.

Is The Stranger actually Saruman in The Rings of Power Season 2?

Approximately half of The Rings of Power’s second season has already passed, yet it remains uncertain if the mysterious figure known as The Stranger is truly Saruman, a role made iconic by Christopher Lee in Peter Jackson’s films.

There’s evidence sprinkled throughout the show suggesting that the mysterious figure could indeed be Saruman. As previously noted, Saruman was the first among the Istari to arrive in Middle-earth. Since we haven’t seen any other Istari on the series so far, it’s quite plausible that the enigmatic character is actually Saruman, rather than Gandalf, as some viewers speculate.

Additionally, considering Saruman as a possible main character and ally to a Hobbit from the Harfoots named Nori might be an interesting approach. This could enrich and complicate his character as he eventually reveals his true nature as an antagonist.

Is Saruman in The Rings of Power Season 2?

In essence, if the hypothesis that the enigmatic character is indeed Saruman holds true, he would appear in Season 2 of The Rings of Power. Yet, this supposition faces a significant challenge because Saruman emerged during the Third Age, whereas The Rings of Power is set in the Second Age, making the timeline inconsistent.

Based on what’s been presented so far, The Rings of Power has made some changes to the original storyline, deviating from its source material. Consequently, it’s not impossible that the character known as The Stranger could turn out to be Saruman in the end.
