Shogun Update: Seasons 2 & 3 Will Have ‘Separate Narratives’ With ‘Continuing Characters’

As a hardcore gamer and avid fan of historical dramas, I can hardly contain my excitement for the next installments of “Shogun”! With its captivating storyline, breathtaking visuals, and top-notch performances, season 1 was an absolute masterpiece that left me craving more.

John Landgraf, the chairman of FX Networks, has given an update about the second and third seasons of Shogun.

In February 2024, Shogun debuted simultaneously on FX and FX on Hulu. Surprisingly, plans for just one season quickly evolved into production of three seasons following the completion of the first. More recently, the series has garnered 18 awards at the 76th Primetime Emmys.

Discussing the future of Shōgun with Deadline, Landgraf gave a peek into what viewers can anticipate from the upcoming next two seasons.

What did John Landgraf say about Shogun Season 2 and Season 3?

Landgraf mentioned that Shōgun Season 2 is progressing. They are receiving scripts and outlines, working on determining the locations for filming, and considering if they’ll stick with the previous shooting method or make some adjustments.

As a dedicated gamer, I’d put it this way: “When someone asked if Seasons 2 and 3 of Shōgun were going to be filmed one after the other, Landgraf answered that they wouldn’t because each season tells its own unique story.

He went on to explain, “Each part forms a single ongoing storyline, featuring recurring characters. However, these are distinct storylines, not necessarily guaranteeing three seasons. Yet, as we explore the characters and their history, which is presented in a fictional way, it feels appropriate to divide it into three seasons.

Landgraf added, “I’ve long dreamed of filming in Japan. It’s been challenging to find a way to produce this show in Japan because the size of their stage bases and production capabilities are slightly different from ours. We’ve faced difficulties in aligning the location with the scale of our production abilities, given the ambition of the show. Unfortunately, authentic medieval Japanese castles no longer exist, and even if they did, they wouldn’t be available for filming.

Currently, you can watch the first season of Shogun on Hulu. As of now, there’s no set date for the release of Shogun Season 2.
