Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 goes harder on choices and consequences

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is shaping up to be a truly immersive and engaging medieval adventure. The original game was a breath of fresh air, offering a realistic take on the medieval era without sacrificing fun and excitement. Warhorse Studios has clearly learned from their past successes and failures, as evidenced by the refined combat mechanics and improved dialogue system that I got to experience during PAX West 2024.

The initial Kingdom Come: Deliverance was a delightful surprise for enthusiasts of story-driven medieval escapades, as WarHorse Studios unveiled an engaging, albeit imperfect, debut with its 2018 launch. Since then, the team has gathered valuable experience and is now returning with a second installment that expands upon elements from the first game to create something more expansive and improved. Shacknews recently had a sneak peek at Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 during PAX West.

In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, gamers journey through 15th-century Medieval Europe and follow Henry of Skalitz’s narrative as he seeks vengeance for his parents’ murder. As the story unfolds, Henry finds himself essentially starting anew, and this is demonstrated in the game segment I played at PAX West this year. Upon grabbing the mouse and keyboard on the exhibit floor, I discovered that Henry was yet to master the art of swordsmanship effectively. Thankfully, a kind German named Menhard offered guidance to help me grasp the mechanics of combat – though he made an effort, his teaching methods were less than perfect.

It transpires that instructing fencing within Kuttenberg’s city limits is forbidden, leading to a heated dispute between Menhard and the local guild master. This disagreement forms the basis for Kingdom Come’s engaging dialogue system. This verbal altercation may conclude in various ways. In a moment of quick thinking, I suggested that Menhard was merely standing up for his honor due to my past intimacy with his daughter. Impressed by this, the guild master chose to issue a warning and a fine instead.

Here are some key points to bear in mind regarding this interaction: Firstly, it’s important to understand that Menhard indeed has a daughter, which made his reaction to the improvised line less than favorable. To diffuse the situation, Henry had to swiftly think of alternative dialogue options, emphasizing their shared predicament. Fortunately, this approach seemed to soothe Menhard somewhat.

After this meeting, Henry realized he still had much to learn about using a sword, while Menhard found himself yearning to confront the guild master. Intriguingly, Menhard came up with a plan: he would steal the guild master’s sword and exhibit it in the town square as a sign of his challenge for a duel. To achieve this, he would have to sneak into the guild master’s private chambers undetected and make off with the blade.

Unsurprisingly, actions have repercussions, particularly when they involve rule-breaking. However, I hadn’t anticipated that the repercussions would materialize so swiftly – like when I attempted to surreptitiously enter the guild master’s chambers late at night and was caught by the maidservant. A series of responses presented themselves, each with its own potential outcomes. One option was to blatantly dismiss her presence and depart immediately. But, I decided to compensate the maid for my indiscretion, assuming it would silence her and keep my secret hidden.

In my second try, I managed to sneakily take the sword undetected and placed it right in the heart of the town square. This action left the guild master and his associates shocked, as they were well aware of the potential consequences. True to form, Menhard ambled by and declared a duel challenge had been issued with the royal guards ready to enforce it. What I hadn’t anticipated was the guild master accusing me of being seen during the theft. It turned out that a treacherous maiden tattled on me. The guard confirmed this, which propelled the duel proceedings forward, but the guild master’s team gained an advantage by being allowed to wear armor.

From what I gathered during my limited playtime, the intricate mechanics of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 were just a glimpse. I didn’t engage in any actual combat, but the game offers numerous activities that promise a lengthy journey. The developers have hinted that this game could last anywhere from 60 to 100 hours, similar to its predecessor. Luckily, prior experience with the first game isn’t necessary to jump into this sequel. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on Tuesday, February 11.

“The sneak peek you see here is from a demonstration version of the game, which will be playable at PAX West in 2024. However, please note that the finished product may still undergo changes.
