As a gamer with an eye for aesthetics and a heart for nostalgia, I can hardly contain my excitement for Gray Malin’s collaboration with UNO! Growing up playing UNO myself, I never imagined that one day, the iconic card game would team up with such a renowned photographer. The fact that this collaboration is not only fun to play but also visually stunning is just the cherry on top of an already fantastic experience.
Gray Malin’s photography career is thriving, spanning various photographic series across numerous countries, unique locations, and adorable dogs over the years. His work, characterized by vibrant colors and striking compositions, has positioned it perfectly for display on your wall, while also paving the way for collaboration with one of America’s favorite card games – UNO. The upcoming partnership between Gray Malin and UNO promises a distinctive twist on the classic card deck, ensuring not only enjoyable gameplay, but also aesthetic appeal. In an exclusive interview, Gray Malin shares insights into his journey as a photographer, and how his inspiration played a pivotal role in his collaboration with UNO.
Gray Malin: My passion for photography began in high school when I worked in the darkroom, developing black-and-white films. This fascination not only persisted throughout my high school years but also influenced my academic pursuits in college.
Gray Malin: My primary motivation is to produce artwork that transports viewers. I aim to evoke a sense of escapism in my photographs, making the viewer feel as if they’ve been whisked away to another place. Honestly, I find inspiration in creating work that brings joy and positive feelings when it’s seen.
Gray Malin explained that the vibrant hues found in an UNO deck significantly impacted his creative process. These colors are synonymous with the popular game, and he felt motivated to merge them with his photography. Consequently, he drew inspiration from various aspects of his work, such as his Bon Voyage travel airplane series, his Dogs and Animals series, his snow and ski collections, as well as his renowned coastal beaches and aerial view series. He then matched these themes with the colors and designs from the UNO deck.
Gray Malin: To tell you the truth, I spent my childhood playing UNO, and I absolutely love it! Now, I have two little ones, so UNO has been our very first family game. When UNO contacted Mattel, I was thrilled at the prospect of working together on this project, knowing that there was such a genuine connection between us for the collaboration.
Gray Malin: My passion for interior design significantly contributes to my unique approach as a photographer. My goal is to produce images that not only are visually stunning but also evoke a sense of escapism and inspiration in viewers. Since the start of my career, I’ve made it a mission to capture the essence of a getaway in every photograph I take, aiming to transport people to different places and uplift their spirits. For close to 15 years now, I have lived by the mantra, ‘Turn each day into a vacation,’ and this philosophy is reflected in every image I create.
Gray Malin: My next big news, aside from the UNO artist collaboration, is the release of my new book titled “Dogs,” set for October 15th. This book is truly unique as it showcases a playful adventure of me capturing different dog breeds in renowned locations such as Beverly Hills, London, New York, Paris, Palm Beach, Aspen and more. I hope it becomes an ideal holiday gift for all dog enthusiasts.
Gray Malin: In essence, art is something universal, and I strongly feel that UNO, cherished by numerous nations across various age groups, serves as a shared, inclusive platform. As a photographer, my goal has always been to create work that makes people feel involved and connected. The combination of artwork on the UNO cards for the UNO Artiste series is truly harmonious. I aspire that while playing the game, individuals will be inspired by my card images and feel as if they’re embarking on a mini-journey.
Gray Malin: My journeys serve as a significant source of inspiration for my photographs. I aim to evoke in my audience the same emotions I experience when visiting new destinations, making my work feel both classic and current. The mystery of when the photograph was taken adds to this sense of timelessness, allowing viewers who display the photo in their homes or own it to feel a connection with that place or destination as well. I take great pride in going to great lengths to achieve this timeless quality in my nature photography.
As a devoted admirer of Gray Malin’s work: It wasn’t easy to make my selection, given the abundance of stunning photographs. However, when we identified common themes, the combination of dogs and animals was particularly captivating. The winter snow and ski images added a playful twist, contrasting with other seasons like coastal beaches and aerial views. To complete the collection, the Bon Voyage airplane Windows series seemed to perfectly bridge all the different projects together.
Gray Malin: My artwork aims to whisk people away, so when they view one of my images, I wish they sense an escape to a place they’ve visited before or dream of exploring. To me, the key aspect in developing a fine art series is fostering inclusivity and making viewers feel involved in that joyous occasion.
On Thursday, September 19th at 9:00 AM, you can find the art of Gray Malin available for purchase at MattelCreations.com and Macy’s.
