As someone who has spent years immersed in the vibrant world of Indian cinema and dance, I must confess that the recent news about choreographer Shaik Jani Basha, or as he is popularly known, Jani Master, has left me saddened and disheartened. Having witnessed the magic his choreography brings to life on screen, it’s heart-wrenching to learn of such allegations against him.
In an unexpected development, dance instructor Shaik Jani Basha, also known as Jani Master, has been accused of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman. The initial complaint against him was registered under the Zero FIR system at Raidurgam, and subsequently, the case has been moved to the Narsingi police for a thorough investigation.
According to an article in The Hindu, it’s stated that the woman is not only a dancer but also a choreographer. Over the past couple of months, she has been collaborating extensively with Jani Master. In her report, she alleges that he inappropriately sexually harassed her during their outdoor filming sessions.
To everyone’s astonishment, it was revealed that Jani Master repeatedly exploited a woman, not just once but on numerous instances. According to Hindustan Times, the authorities declared that the victim accused Master of sexually assaulting her on various occasions during film shoots in different cities such as Chennai, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. She also asserted that he harassed her at her residence in Narsingi several times… since the woman is a local resident of Narsingi, the case has been moved to the local police station for further examination and investigation.
Jani Master is currently detained for allegations involving rape (under section 376), intimidation (section 506), and causing bodily harm (section 323) as per the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Shikha Goel, head of the Women Safety Wing in Telangana, has recommended that the film industry conducts an internal investigation under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act (PoSH), and also file a police report.
On another note, it’s not a new occurrence that the choreographer has found himself embroiled in a dispute. Previously, there was an allegation by a dancer named Satish who submitted a complaint against Jani Master for harassment. He alleged that the choreographer was hindering him from gaining employment in film productions.
Later on, Jani Master disputed these accusations during a public press event. In addition, a court in Hyderabad sentenced him to six months imprisonment in the year 2019, for a physical altercation that took place at a college back in 2015. Notably, he is well-known for choreographing songs like “Rowdy Baby” and “Aayi Nai” from Stree 2, among others.
