Inside Out 2 4K SteelBook Review: Take Home Pixar’s Stellar Sequel

As a gamer with a heart full of pixels and a soul deeply entwined with the animated world, I can confidently say that Inside Out 2 has left me spellbound! Having grown up with the original, it’s been an absolute joy to see Riley navigate her teenage years with all the new emotions in tow.

2024 saw Inside Out 2 becoming a blockbuster success at the cinemas, with audiences loving it as much as the first. Now, enthusiasts can grab their own copy of the animated movie in stunning 4K quality with the release of the Inside Out 2 SteelBook Edition.

The sequel to Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out, titled Inside Out 2, finds our protagonist Riley, now a teenager, as her emotional headquarters is thrown into chaos by an unexpected event: the arrival of brand new emotions, including Anxiety and others, leaving Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust unsure about their feelings.

What fresh insights can be offered concerning the highest-earning animated movie ever made? As you might already be aware, it’s truly remarkable! Unlike its predecessor, which resonated with viewers due to its portrayal of emotions and childlike perspectives, the sequel delves into the intricacies of mental health and the challenges that teenagers face. Everybody experiences anxiety to some extent, and Inside Out 2 does an exceptional job of illustrating this — most significantly, it demonstrates how we can learn to cope with those feelings within us.

In the stunning 4K presentation of Pixar’s animation, the colorful characters and vivid world leap off the screen. However, much of the film’s success must be attributed to its exceptional voice actors. Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, and Lewis Black deliver phenomenal performances as Joy, Sadness, and Anger, but Maya Hawke as Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri as Envy perfectly match their energy and are equally entertaining to watch. It’s worth noting that Paul Walter Hauser’s portrayal of Embarrassment is a standout, even though he speaks very little – his performance remains one of the highlights.

One of the biggest reasons to pick up the Inside Out 2 4K SteelBook is, of course, the superb packaging. This is one of the cutest SteelBooks I’ve seen, as the front features some wonderful artwork showing all nine emotions. There’s a gloss on the characters, so it looks even better in person. Meanwhile, the back features a silhouette of RIley’s face with all the emotions coexisting within her. The inside also features artwork of Joy and Sadness looking in amazement at all of Riley’s memories.

In the sequel of Inside Out, titled Inside Out 2, you’ll find an assortment of engaging bonus content. There are approximately twenty minutes of captivating featurettes, one of which is called “New Emotions,” an eleven-minute video that brings together the talented cast and crew to discuss the introduction of new characters such as Anxiety. The other, titled “Unlocking The Vault,” offers a nine-minute peek into the intricate animation techniques used in the vault scene. Moreover, you’ll find about 24 minutes of deleted scenes, presented as concept art and animatics. These scenes come with insightful commentary from director Kelsey Mann explaining their original concepts before they were included in the film, making for an enriching viewing experience.
