As a longtime fan of Alfonso Cuarón’s cinematic masterpieces, I am absolutely thrilled to hear about his latest creation, “An Almost Christmas Story.” The fact that this animated short is the final installment in Cuarón’s holiday shorts collection has me counting down the days until its release on Disney+.
Alfonso Cuarón’s animated short titled “A Nearly Christmas Tale” is set to debut on Disney+ towards the end of this year. According to Disney, this fall will see the premiere of this streamer-exclusive short. “A Nearly Christmas Tale” represents the concluding part of Cuarón’s series of holiday-themed shorts.
The short film is based on Rockefeller the Owl — Rocky for short. Rocky was a small owl rescued from the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in 2020.

Who is in the An Almost Christmas Story Cast?
In the movie “An Almost Christmas Story,” we find Cary Christopher portraying Moon, Estella Madrigal as Luna, Jim Gaffigan in the role of Papa Owel, Mamoudou Athie as Pelly, Alex Ross Perry as Dave The Dog, Gianna Joseph as Peaky, Phil Rosenthal playing Punt, Natasha Lyonne as Pat, and John C. Reilly taking on the character of The Folk Singer.
Reilly’s Folk Singer will perform four songs in the short, including two originals.
David Lowery serves as both producer and director for the movie titled “An Almost Christmas Story,” which he co-wrote with Jack Thorne, drawing inspiration from a story by Cuarón and Thorne. Alongside Cuarón and Gabriela Rodríguez, they are also credited as producers. Nicholas Ashe Bateman takes on the role of creative designer, while Daniel Hart is responsible for the film’s music composition.
The production of ‘Almost a Christmas Story’ was a collaboration between Disney Branded Television, Cuarón’s Esperanto Filmoj, Titmouse, and Maere Studios. The animation work was handled by 88 Pictures.
In the past, Alfonso Cuarón’s short films, specifically “Le Pupille” and “The Shepherd,” were produced using real-life action rather than animation or computer graphics. Notably, “Le Pupille” was recognized with an Academy Award nomination in the category of Best Live Action Short Film.
