As a long-time fan of the Marvel Universe, I must say that these changes are quite intriguing! It seems like the developers are really trying to shake things up and keep the game fresh.

In the recent Marvel Snap’s Spider-Season update, there’s been a return of Move decks, notably with Madame Web’s introduction this week. Conversely, Discard decks have seen less play in the past few weeks, leading Second Dinner to try boosting that strategy. The September 12, 2024 patch is set to enhance two Hela tools slightly and provide Thanos-like balance adjustments to other cards.

Sandman

  • [Old] 5/6 – On Reveal: Players can only play 1 card next turn.
  • [New] 5/7 – On Reveal: Next turn, cards cost 1 more. (maximum 6)

Instead of relying on Sandman as a barrier against powerful decks that could potentially threaten multiple cards towards the end of the game, we’ve observed that when the game environment offers such an opportunity for Sandman, these decks can become quite irritating. In certain aspects, it mirrors the experience with Leech, and we are considering a similar modification. By lessening the consequence on Sandman, it will reduce its effectiveness in sealing the game, while still significantly influencing opponents’ strategies to play numerous cards.

Mockingbird

  • [Old] 6/10 – Costs 1 less for each of your cards in play that didn’t start in your deck.
  • [Change] 6/10 -> 6/9

In recent games, Mockingbird has been a powerful card in many winning decks, so we’re reducing its power slightly. Some players might think a 6/9 is less potent than a 6/10 because of vulnerability to Shang-Chi, but historically, this hasn’t been the case. If it turns out that Mockingbird is an exception to this rule, we’ll deal with it when the time comes.

Aero

  • [Old] 5/9 – On Reveal: Move the last enemy card played anywhere to this location.
  • [Change] 5/9 -> 5/10

Recently, Mockingbird has been offering some level of assistance to Skaar. So, we searched for potential candidates with around 10 Power who seemed ready for an enhancement. Aero was exactly that kind of card and a suitable choice among the 5-Cost cards due to its ability not being solely advantageous.

Black Cat

  • [Old] 4/9 – If this is in your hand after the turn, discard it.
  • [Change] 4/9 -> 4/10

Similarly, after modifying Hela and Black Knight, Black Cat has experienced a significant drop in play rate. To assess its influence further, we’ll introduce a new Power and observe its effect on the play rate.

Ghost Rider

  • [Old] 4/3 – On Reveal: Bring back one of your discarded cards to this location.
  • [Change] 4/3 -> 4/4

As a gamer, I can’t wait to find the perfect place for the thrilling Ghost Rider card in my deck. Just like back in the beta days when the 3-Cost Ghost Rider was a force to be reckoned with, we don’t want to take any chances and make drastic changes that might upset its balance. For now, let’s see how it performs with some power tweaks, and we’ll reassess later.

Moon Girl

  • [Old] 4/4 – On Reveal: Duplicate your hand.
  • [Change] 4/4 -> 4/5

This card, Moon Girl, has shown potential for some intriguing combinations, but its moment in the limelight was brief following Loki’s arrival in the timeline. We’re thinking about revitalizing this card to recapture some of its initial brilliance. Initially, we experimented with a 3-Cost version internally, but it didn’t work out as planned, so don’t anticipate seeing that alteration anytime soon. Considering the strength of decks featuring Mockingbird recently, we opted for a more conservative approach in terms of its power level.

War Machine

  • [Old] 4/7 – On Reveal: Until the end of next turn, nothing can stop you from playing cards anywhere.
  • [New] 4/7 – Ongoing: Nothing can stop you from playing cards anywhere.

Many players noted that the new activate keyword had the potential to benefit War Machine. We also thought that might be true, but it turned out that even at 3/5 War Machine wasn’t quite as effective as one would hope–a card that packs most of its punch leading into turn 6 just isn’t an ideal home for activate. So we’re going with the backup plan here, changing the On Reveal to an Ongoing.

Agatha Harkness

  • [Old] 6/14 – Agatha starts in your hand and plays your cards for you
  • [New] 6/14 – Agatha starts in your hand. She plays your cards for you on even turns.

*Just like everyone else, we can’t wait for Kathryn Hahn’s return in Agatha All Along, so we thought it would be fun to unleash our own version of Agatha. Now, you’ll notice that our Agatha is more open to collaboration, taking turns with the player instead of always playing solo. However, we didn’t make any other changes–she’ll still appear as a bonus card in your hand!*

One notable shift, beyond the frequent use of Black Cat and Ghost Rider cards in Hela decks, involves several key adjustments. For instance, Sandman underwent a rework that seems to hinder him initially, but this disadvantage is effectively neutralized by Mobius M. Mobius, so anticipate an increase in its usage to counterbalance this impact. The removal of Mockingbird from Shang Chi’s reach might seem peculiar at first, yet it also imposes a penalty on those running Skaar. Lastly, the War Machine alteration is intriguing, as it essentially allows for unlimited drops of The Infinaut whenever it’s active in play.

The last big change is to Agatha Harkness and it’s one that almost violates the spirit of the card. Agatha’s whole deal is that she plays your cards as long as she’s in your hand, but total control should mean total control, not control some of the time. It’ll be interesting to see how this change is received both in the community and in the meta.
