Josh Brolin Declines Lanterns Role, DCU Still Looking for Hal Jordan

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say I’m intrigued by the latest development in the DC Studios’ Lanterns series. The news about Josh Brolin turning down the role of Hal Jordan comes as a bit of a surprise, given his impressive portrayal of other iconic characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it appears that the DC Studios’ Lanterns series will need to look for a new actor to portray Hal Jordan, as Josh Brolin has declined the chance to play the character.

According to recent reports, THR mentioned that Brolin could potentially take on the role of Hal Jordan, who is a popular character from the Green Lantern comics. Typically, Jordan serves as the primary Green Lantern in DC Comics and related media.

The report states that Brolin was given the chance to play the role back in August, yet declined for reasons not disclosed. As of now, there’s no word on who DC Studios might approach instead. However, it’s been debunked that Matthew McConaughey could potentially be under consideration, according to THR.

What do we know about Lanterns?

The television show titled “Lanterns” will be overseen by Chris Mundy (known for True Detective: Night Country and Ozark), along with Damon Lindelof (recognized from The Leftovers and Watchmen) and Tom King (famous for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow). The latter two are also contributing to the series’ script. HBO officially green-lit this project, a straight-to-series order, in June 2024, over a year after it was initially announced back in January 2023.

The plot revolves around John Stewart and Hal Jordan, two space-patrolling officers, who find themselves entangled in a sinister, homegrown case while probing a murder committed in small-town America.

James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEOs of DC Studios, expressed their excitement about introducing a significant DC comic book series on HBO. Chris, Damon, and Tom are leading this project. The characters John Stewart and Hal Jordan, known for their captivating personas in the DC universe, will be featured in ‘Lanterns,’ an innovative detective story that forms a crucial part of the unified DCU we plan to debut next summer, starting with Superman.
