Knuckles Blu-ray SteelBook Review: Sonic Spin-off Gets Stylish Release

As a lifelong Sonic fan who grew up playing the video games and watching the old OVA, I can confidently say that the Knuckles Blu-ray SteelBook is a must-have addition to any collection! The series itself was a fun, quick watch with just the right mix of humor and action. While some might be disappointed by the occasional focus on Wade’s storyline instead of nonstop Knuckles action, I found Pally’s comic timing and the hilarious supporting cast more than made up for it.

This year, the “Knuckles” series starring Idris Elba made its debut on Paramount+. Now, you can bring it home with the Knuckles Blu-ray SteelBook release, which offers a chic way to own this Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off. This edition also includes some valuable bonus features.

In the story between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, we find ourselves following Knuckles, played by Idris Elba, on a humorous and thrilling adventure of self-realization. He decides to mentor Wade (Adam Pally) as his apprentice and educate him about being an Echidna warrior. This description summarizes the plot. Joining Knuckles are familiar faces like Ben Schwartz (Sonic), Colleen O’Shaughnessy (Tails), Tika Sumpter (Maddie), along with Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones), Rory McCann (Game of Thrones), Cary Elwes (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), and Paul Scheer (Black Monday).

The animated series, Knuckles, proved popular on Paramount+, and it’s not hard to see why. Spanning six episodes, this fast-paced show maintains the same enchanting appeal and humor as the initial two Sonic films. However, there are moments when Knuckles takes a step back in favor of his apprentice Wade (portrayed by Adam Pally). Therefore, viewers hoping for three hours straight of Knuckles action might be slightly let down since the series is more focused on being a buddy comedy, given its budget constraints.

Despite being sandwiched between impressive Knuckles scenes, Wade’s narrative stands out with its blend of personal growth and comedic elements. Pally delivers laugh-out-loud moments as “Pistol” Pete, a quirky and eccentric father figure, who happens to be Cary Elwes in disguise. The storyline also offers a humorous low-budget rock opera starring Michael Bolton, as well as some amusing situations like Knuckles battling Kid Cudi and subtle Easter egg references such as the cowboy hat reminiscent of the old OVA series.

One of the big selling points of the Knuckles Blu-ray SteelBook is naturally the SteelBook itself. The eye-popping red case features the powered-up echidna on the cover and looks great. Meanwhile, the back features a cool image of Knuckles on his throne, which is sure to look great in any Sonic collection, and the inside is a humorous image of Knuckles wearing a virtual reality headset next to Sonic. It’s a really stylish SteelBook and one of my favorites as a fan of the video games.

The Blu-ray version of Knuckles includes approximately 12 minutes of additional content. Many of these extras were initially shown on television or online platforms, such as a game of “choose one or the other” and cast members imitating Knuckles. While enjoyable to watch, they’ve been seen before. However, it’s convenient to have them all gathered together. The main attraction lies in the new blooper reel, lasting about 7.5 minutes and filled with priceless footage of the Knuckles puppet that the actors captured prior to the addition of CGI effects. These scenes are a riot, and every moment featuring the puppet makes me chuckle.

Knuckles Blu-ray SteelBook Review: Final Verdict

The Knuckles Blu-ray SteelBook is an easy recommendation for any Sonic fan looking to add the hilarious series to their collection. It looks great when being displayed on a shelf and is just as fun to watch. Plus, the worthwhile bonus features give you an extra incentive to revisit the show before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 comes out.
