As a history enthusiast with a soft spot for anime, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming Netflix adaptation of Leviathan! The teaser trailer promises a captivating blend of alternate history and mecha action that has me eagerly awaiting 2025.
Netflix has unveiled a sneak peek, or teaser, for its upcoming anime series based on Scott Westerfeld and Keith Thompson’s 2009 novel titled Leviathan. Set in an alternate timeline during World War I, the series is slated to premiere in 2025.
In the year 1914, just before a great war began, a runaway prince and a young woman disguised as a man crossed paths on an advanced airship named HMS Leviathan. Their encounter significantly altered the direction of history.

The video offers a sneak peek into the anime’s leading character, Aleksandar from Hohenberg, who is the prince in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It also showcases the series’ thrilling action scenes featuring giant robots, or mecha war machines. As of now, Netflix has not disclosed the voice actors for the show.
As a dedicated fan, I’m excited to share that “Leviathan” is masterfully directed by Christophe Ferreira, with Qubic Pictures (of Eden and Star Wars: Visions fame) taking the reins as producers. The anime’s music is in the talented hands of Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnouchi, known for their work on Ghost In The Shell SAC_2045 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Westerfield himself has been deeply immersed in the show’s production, assuring us that this anime will be a “near perfectly faithful” adaptation. This is a project by Orange, a studio renowned for its work on BEASTARS and Land of the Lustrous.
