What to expect for Aegon Targaryen in House of the Dragon Season 3 based on the book

As a seasoned gamer of the Game of Thrones saga, I must say that Aegon Targaryen’s journey in House of the Dragon Season 2 left me with a mix of frustration and anticipation. His inexperience as a ruler and his poor decision-making were on full display at Rook’s Rest, but there’s a silver lining in the prophecy hinting at his future rule from a wooden chair.

In “House of the Dragon” Season 2, Aegon Targaryen demonstrated why he might not be fit to rule. His immaturity was evident, as he acted rashly and irresponsibly, particularly during his intoxicated outburst at Rook’s Rest.

For six months, Aegon had been confined to bed, suffering severely. In the final episode, he began to ponder life’s purpose when it seemed that Rhaenyra would seize King’s Landing. Death appeared imminent until Larys Strong persuaded him to continue fighting.

As a devoted fan, I found myself on the edge of my seat during the final moments of House of the Dragon Season 2, where Larys and Aegon managed to slip away from King’s Landing. The destination remains uncertain, but I can’t help but speculate about what lies ahead. To gain more insight into the future, I plan to delve back into George R.R. Martin’s epic series, Fire & Blood.

Aegon should head to Dragonstone in House of the Dragon Season 3

As Rhaenyra departs for King’s Landing, her ancestral Targaryen home remains unguarded. It seems likely that Aegon will take advantage of this situation, given that he has learned Sunfyre is residing there. However, it’s uncertain if Sunfyre is indeed alive in ‘House of the Dragon’. Aegon presumes the dragon to be deceased, but we haven’t witnessed its demise on screen yet.

In the Fall of Dragonstone, Aegon soars aloft on Sunfyre. During their flight, Sunfyre engages in a final battle with Moondancer, Baela’s dragon. Moondancer meets its end, but Sunfyre plummets to the ground. To prevent his own demise from the fall, Aegon leaps off Sunfyre, only to land heavily and fracture both legs beyond repair. Consequently, he is confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his existence.

It’s been established that Helaena witnessed Aegon reigning once more, this time from a throne made of wood. This is the symbolism the prophecy is hinting at.

Sunfyre kills Rhaenyra in Fire & Blood

One reason I’m not convinced that Sunfyre isn’t alive is due to his ongoing role in the events. He not only takes the life of Moondancer, but it seems he has a crucial part yet to play, specifically by taking the life of Rhaenyra as well.

Six months after her stay in King’s Landing, Rhaenyra suddenly departs and returns to Dragonstone, unaware that Aegon was already there. Unfortunately, she is apprehended and meets a tragic end as Sunfyre devours her. Her son, Aegon the Younger, bears witness to this horrific event. However, despite Ser Alfred Broome’s plea for Prince Aegon’s life, Aegon II chooses not to execute him further.

Aegon finds himself unable to promptly return to King’s Landing as the Velaryon fleet encircles Dragonstone. Additionally, Aegon can no longer ride Sunfyre back due to the battle against Moondancer, which in turn caused Sunfyre to be grounded. Sadly, Sunfyre eventually passes away at Dragonstone.

Aegon finds a way back to King’s Landing

This next part is likely to happen during House of the Dragon Season 4.

Aegon proves that he has learned from past mistakes. He offers House Velaryon a pardon, but Alyn Velaryon needs to swear fealty to him and allow him to cross Blackwater Bay.

As a gamer, here’s my take: “In the game, I find myself at a turning point, with Rhaenyra’s claim seemingly crumbling. Her demise wasn’t entirely unexpected. Enter Corlys, who pledges allegiance to the Green faction and assumes the role of Master of Ships. This development coincides neatly with Alyn’s impending assault on Dragonstone and Aegon’s plans to execute Baela.

Despite managing to return to King’s Landing, Aegon will no longer have the opportunity to rule from the Iron Throne as he lacks the ability to walk.

Unfortunately, Aegon doesn’t get a favorable conclusion; it appears he was murdered by poison, possibly at the hands of someone close to him. With his demise, the Iron Throne is inherited by the last surviving Targaryen heir. Aegon the Younger then assumes power and marries his uncle’s daughter, Jaehaera, thereby uniting the two families.
