Renuka Swamy case: Jailed Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa's judicial custody extended till September 12

As a die-hard fan who has followed the tumultuous journey of Sandalwood, I am left utterly disheartened and appalled by the recent developments in the Renuka Swamy murder case. The extension of judicial custody for Darshan Thoogudeepa, Pavithra Gowda, and others only serves to prolong the agony that has gripped us all.

On Monday, a judge in Bengaluru granted an extension of the judicial detention for actors Darshan Thoogudeepa, Pavithra Gowda, and other suspects implicated in the murder of Renuka Swamy. Their judicial custody was originally set to expire on September 9, but it has now been prolonged until September 12. The defendants were brought before the court via video conference from various prisons.

At present, Darshan is being held at the Ballari Prison. His transfer from the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail occurred due to a widely-shared image depicting him leisurely socializing with three others, one of whom is a known criminal, on the prison grounds. This incident sparked quite a stir and controversy.

The Indian Express published a report stating that ACP Chandan Kumar provided digital proof to incriminate the suspect. Notably, the police presented a 3,991-page indictment against the suspect on September 4. In this document, the police documented the testimonies of 97 individuals, among which 27 were given under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) before a magistrate.

Furthermore, it’s been reported that Darshan Thoogudeepa may file an application with the court asking them to limit media outlets from broadcasting or publishing details about the charge sheet. For those not in the know, Darshan Thoogudeepa and his suspected partner Pavithra Gowda were taken into custody on June 11 over the alleged murder of Renuka Swamy, who was a fan of the Kannada actor.

As a die-hard admirer, if the rumors are true, it seems Pavithra was subjected to disrespectful comments by the victim, and they even pointed fingers at her for causing trouble in Darshan’s marriage. This obviously sparked outrage among Sandalwood actors, leading to an unfortunate sequence of events where Darshan, allegedly with the assistance of a henchman, took Renuka Swamy’s life.

It’s important to note that Renuka, who was 33 years old and an auto driver, suffered severe abuse as indicated by his autopsy report. Renuka Swamy’s body showed signs of extensive brutality, including multiple bruises, a missing ear, and ruptured testicles. The police investigation has pointed towards Darshan’s direct involvement in the violent attack on the victim.
