Video game news in review: The biggest news from the week of September 6, 2024

As a seasoned gaming enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless digital worlds, I must say this week’s news has been quite a rollercoaster ride!

This week’s video game news covers a wide range of topics, including fresh releases, unexpected cancellations, and ongoing speculations about the Switch 2!

Concord shutting down after 2 weeks

I’ve got to be honest with you all, it’s with a heavy heart that I break the news: Concord, our newly released first-person PVP shooter game, will be closing its doors just two weeks after its debut. If you haven’t heard, Concord is a game where you engage in player versus player combat in a first-person perspective. It’s not free to play and requires an online connection, with a $40 price tag attached.

Essentially, the game wasn’t well-received by critics and failed to maintain a player base of 1000 concurrent users on Steam at any moment. Consequently, Sony and Firewalk Studios declared this week that they would be closing down the game and issuing refunds for those who bought it.

The Haunted Chocolatier update

Last week, we overlooked this point in our summary, but we felt it necessary to address it. The creator of Stardew Valley, ConcernedApe, recently posted a lengthy tweet indicating that he is still diligently working towards releasing the 1.6 update on consoles (currently available only on PC).

Apart from making this statement, he additionally mentioned that he hasn’t dabbled with “The Haunted Chocolatier” since he began working on the 1.6 update (and this update is quite substantial, nearly as large as 1.5). Here’s a link to his tweet for further details: [Tweet Link]

To be frank, I understand why he’s taking his time with the new installment of Stardew, given how expansive and unique the original game has become. He should spend all the time necessary to create his next masterpiece. We’re more than happy to wait and see what he comes up with.

Astro Bot releases on September 6

If you haven’t tried playing Astro’s Playroom on the PlayStation 5 yet, you’ve truly been missing out. Not only did it demonstrate the capabilities of the new controllers’ haptics, but it was also an adorable and extremely enjoyable game.

It appears that the initial full-length, non-VR video game for Astro Bot is receiving excellent reviews. Currently, it holds a score of 94 on Metacritic, suggesting it’s an enjoyable, retro-style platformer.

The Zelda timeline

It’s no secret that understanding the chronology of the Legend of Zelda series can be quite challenging. However, things took an unexpected turn when @Wario64 shared a photo from Nintendo Live in Sydney, suggesting that The Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom games stand alone apart from the rest of the franchise. Take a look at the image below for more details.

More Nintendo Switch 2 rumors

The chatter about the upcoming models, specifically between the Switch 2 and the PS5 Pro, has been quite intense. However, it appears that whispers about the Switch 2 have grown more frequent this week. There are speculations that an announcement could be made as early as this month, and, unsurprisingly, there’s talk that it will support games from the current Switch library.
