Prison Break shoots to No. 1 show on streaming thanks to Netflix return

As a gamer with a heart full of nostalgia, I can’t help but feel a wave of excitement as I witness the resurgence of “Prison Break” on Netflix. I remember the days when I would stay up late to catch each episode, my eyes glued to the screen, my heart pounding with anticipation. The show was more than just a TV series; it was an experience, a rollercoaster ride of emotions that kept me hooked till the very end.

It’s well known that a popular phenomenon on Netflix, often referred to as the “Netflix Bump,” helps revive shows that may have struggled with ratings but are beloved by fans such as Riverdale, Manifest, All American, and others. Interestingly, even shows that were previously canceled or recently concluded, like Suits, New Amsterdam, and Young Sheldon, have seen a resurgence thanks to Netflix. Now, another series has taken the spotlight

As a dedicated fan, I can share some exciting news based on the latest reports from The Hollywood Reporter. Last week (August 5-11), my all-time favorite series, Prison Break, claimed the top spot among all streaming platforms! It racked up an astounding 1.6 billion minutes watched according to Nielsen’s streaming content ratings. To put this into perspective, even Game of Thrones’ House of the Dragon, which had fewer episodes and wrapped up its second season on Aug. 4, only managed to garner 935 million viewing minutes that week. It just goes to show the enduring appeal of Prison Break!

Prison Break made a comeback on Netflix in late July 2024, with all five seasons in tow. Not only did it take over the streaming viewership rankings, but it’s also been accessible for streaming on Hulu as well, which increases its overall streaming minutes according to Nielsen and reported by THR

Prison Break surges after returning to Netflix

As soon as Prison Break appeared on Netflix, fans found themselves either starting or re-immersing themselves in the series. The Fox drama consistently ranked among Netflix’s top 10 most popular shows for quite some time. However, the introduction of more than a dozen AMC series and numerous Netflix originals like Emily in Paris, as well as the premieres of several other notable originals, ultimately bumped it down the rankings

Despite no longer being on television, the enduring popularity and impact of the series is remarkable, especially considering it was a much-loved show during its original run from 2005 to 2009 and its revival in 2017. Fans have long hoped for a sixth season, but the reunion of leading actors Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell is not about season 6. Instead, it could signal the start of a brand new series

Among other popular streaming shows during the week of Aug. 5-11, “Prison Break” was joined by “The Umbrella Academy” on Netflix (with a total of 1.45 billion minutes watched), “Bluey” (1.03 billion minutes), “Grey’s Anatomy,” available on both Netflix and Hulu (940 million minutes), and the already mentioned “House of the Dragon.” Notably, Netflix hosts three out of the five series, with two of these three being shared with Hulu

Occasionally, figures such as these can stoke the flames of reviving a series or producing a reboot or spinoff, much like what transpired with Suits. At times, it’s just a celebration lap. These billion minutes of viewing might help accelerate the development of the Hulu spinoff series. However, above all, it’s thrilling to witness television shows continue to be enjoyed and valued by viewers
