As a seasoned gamer and a connoisseur of the calming, I must say that Wilmot Works It Out has become my new go-to game for unwinding after a long day. Having played through the Keita Takahashi-inspired chaos of Hohokum, the melancholy of I Am Dead, and the soothing bird wrangling in Flock, I can confidently say that this game is a perfect addition to Hollow Ponds’ electric track record.
Prior to the unveiling of Wilmot Works It Out, Richard Hogg and Hollow Ponds had already established a strong reputation for themselves in the world of video games. Their work spanned from the creatively chaotic Hohokum, inspired by Keita Takahashi, to the somber narrative of I Am Dead, and the calming bird management found in Flock
The recently released game by Finji, the creators of Usual June, is Hollow Ponds’ first direct follow-up, featuring the character of Wilmot from Wilmot’s Warehouse. However, unlike conventional sequels, Wilmot Works It Out offers a departure from the stressful warehouse management dynamics of its predecessor. Instead, this game focuses on how our blocky protagonist relaxes after a tough workday
Every morning, a delivery person, who appears human but seems strangely distracted, delivers Wilmot’s new mail-order puzzle set that he has subscribed to receive. Interestingly, this postal worker often gets confused with the puzzles, occasionally delivering extra pieces for today’s puzzle or pieces meant for a different day
After opening the damaged package, various puzzle pieces (some even from other puzzles) are spread before you. The challenge then becomes arranging these pieces within the boundaries of your living room so they fit together perfectly, allowing you to display your completed artwork on the wall
As the game advances, the puzzles will grow increasingly complex and chaotic, eventually filling up the wall of your living room. At that point, you’ll need to shift to various other parts of your house, which may offer even fewer spaces for maneuvering yourself and the puzzle pieces. Throughout this process, soothing bossa nova or waiting room-style music is played
It appears unlikely that the game “Wilmot Works It Out” will grow beyond its current simple structure and we’re skeptical about the development of the delivery woman storyline into a vast, global conspiracy. Nevertheless, just like Wilmot, we’re excited to dive into this laid-back puzzle game as a tranquil means of winding down after a tiring day
