However, Jamie and his associates devise a plan to handle the Laoghaire issue. They succeed in catching her with another man, living openly with him. This discovery could have severe consequences for Laoghaire, so she and Jamie will likely reach an understanding
The situation is advantageous since Laoghaire receives a message about Henri-Christian’s sickness in the book. Claire has a solution for his condition, and Laoghaire pleads with her to intervene to save her grandson. She doesn’t understand that Claire is deeply attached to the boy and would help regardless, but Laoghaire proposes a deal: she promises to leave Jamie alone forever and never ask for financial aid again if Claire agrees to help Henri-Christian. And so, it’s agreed!
It’s this event that causes Claire and Jamie to be apart once more, introducing an element of suspense as Jamie and Jenny compose a letter informing Claire about their intended voyage by sea on a specific ship. Tragically, this ship meets its demise, leading everyone to assume that both Jamie and Jenny have perished

Astoundingly, Jamie and Jenny found themselves aboard a vessel departing later than expected. Upon our arrival in Philadelphia, I learned that Claire and Lord John Grey had been under the impression that I had perished at sea. Their union left me stunned, but the news of their consummated marriage sent a wave of anger coursing through me like red-hot iron
