As a gamer who’s spent countless hours binge-watching teen dramas of the ’00s, let me tell you that Kate Robb’s Prime Time Romance is nothing short of a rollercoaster ride through nostalgia town. Having missed her debut novel, I was initially skeptical, but one look at the pitch and I was hooked, just like those shows that we can’t seem to stop watching.
In the realm of teen dramas, every individual tends to have their preferred choice, yet Kate Robb’s “Prime Time Romance” rises above and beyond, offering a fresh and unique take on the genre.
You might recognize the author from her debut novel: This Spells Love. While I didn’t pick up her first book, I was immediately intrigued by Prime Time Romance.
As someone who grew up on those teen dramas of the ‘00s, the pitch was spot-on and from there, I was sucked in. That’s basically how all of us feel when we get invested in those shows because from there, you can’t seem to stop watching.
As a devoted reader eager reader, I'” /> I appreciate the unexpectedly understanding that’m just as goodbye matter what happens or, even when it comes time for the official release. But for now, I can’t wait to express my initial impressions about this captivating read to everyone here. Thank you again, Dial Press, for allowing me to sneak a peek at this masterpiece ahead of schedule!
Prime Time Romance is an utter delight from start to finish.
This story follows our main character, Brynn who is 30 years old, divorced and just trying to make the best of her situation. Unfortunately, she ends up at a bar with some friends and ends up running into her handsome roommate: Josh. While they aren’t close, it’s clear these two are friends in a way. Since Josh is a gentleman, he doesn’t want Brynn to go home alone and he agrees to go with her.
Once home, Brynn queues up her favorite show: Carson’s Cove. It’s one of those soapy small-town teen dramas that we all love. However, it never got the ending it deserved and after Brynn makes a wish for her birthday, she and Josh end up in Carson’s Cove as Sloane and Fletch which seems like a dream at first.
Swiftly, Brynn comes to understand that her life mirrors that of her favorite TV character, yet reality deviates significantly. What she thought was truth is false, and events unfold differently than what she envisioned on the show. Additionally, Brynn finds herself inexplicably drawn to Josh, which only adds to the turmoil and confusion that she experiences, similar to Sloane’s predicament.
Brynn and Josh are both dealing with personal issues as Brynn is still trying to cope with her divorce and believing in love again. Josh is struggling after trying and failing to save his father’s business and also dealing with the grief of losing his father. It would be a lot to deal with in the real world but being in Carson’s Cove only seems to amplify the issues these two are ignoring in their real lives.
